SM Historic District code changes eyed

The City Council here will consider adopting more stringent building and maintenance codes for the city’s historical district.
At the Nov. 5 council meeting, Main Street Association member Luke Bradley proposed that the International Property Maintenance Code Book be adopted for the city’s historical district only. Contract inspector Rodney “Cooney” Richard told the council that about 80 percent of the 15 municipalities he contracts with have adopted the code.

RELIEF NEAR?

Motorists who travel the pitted stretch of LA 31/Main Hwy between Parks and Ruth may soon see some relief as work on the long delayed overlay project is expected to resume in the next week or so, weather permitting. Bill Oliver, DOTD’s Lafayette district administrator, said a contract dispute relating to problems with the asphalt initially used in the overlay and the design of the project, are being resolved.(Mary Terry)

This Sunday, Nov. 4, St. Martinville’s Creole Farmers Market and the Main Street Association will host the annual Chariot Parade, continuing a unique local tradition that goes back nearly a century.
The popular event will be held in front of St. Martin de Tours Catholic Church with registration opening at 6:30 p.m. and the parade beginning at 7.

Miller named SMP fire district boss

Interim Fire District Coordinator Brody Miller has been appointed to the position on a permanent basis.
Miller, who was the parish training officer when Brian Castille resigned as coordinator in May, was named to replace Castille on an interim basis.
The Parish Council offered Miller the permanent appointment at its Oct. 16 meeting and he accepted at an annual salary in the mid-$50,000 range.

Beebe balks at signing termination agreement

Although school board members have approved a release of all claims and contractual obligations document relating to last month’s termination of Dr. Lottie Beebe as superintendent of parish schools, Beebe has not signed the document.
In a prepared statement to the Teche News last week, Beebe said she had never seen the document until given a copy after the board’s Oct. 3 meeting. And it contained provisions much different from an agreement she and board president Burton Dupuis signed on Sept. 17.
