Council meet closed before agenda done

A presentation by an accounting consultant proposing a contract with the city led to a heated exchange and early adjournment of the Oct. 14 St. Martinville City Council meeting.
Mayor Melinda Mitchell had asked for a proposal from accountant Janine Coleman of New Iberia for a 12-month consultation contract to examine the city’s expense and revenue status and procedures. Coleman had aided Mitchell in her mayoral campaign and transition.

Heavy rains

HEAVY RAINS that swept across St. Martin Parish early Tuesday morning knocked down ready-to-harvest sugarcane in many fields from St. Martinville to Arnaudville, including this patch along LA 96/Catahoula Hwy just east of St. Martinville. County Agent Stuart Gauthier says the lodged cane can still be harvested with the modern combines now in use but some sugar content could be lost as the plants struggle to right themselves. “Cool, dry weather would sure be helpful in the coming days,” he says.(Sally Angelle)

Councilman recall D/L is next week

With the Oct. 15 deadline for submission of a recall petition to unseat Dist. 3 City Councilman Dennis Paul Williams approaching, the St. Martin Clerk of Court’s office reports that the petition has not yet been submited. The effort has been marked by legal disputes over the required disclosure of the list in progress.

Beebe, school board finalize settlement

The St. Martin School Board and former Superintendent Dr. Lottie Beebe have agreed to terms of a settlement connected with her abrupt dismissal last month.
Beebe, who had served as superintendent since July 2013, was working on a month-to-month basis following the board’s failure to renew her last contract, which expired on June 30 of this year.

Parents, players want soccer stripes

A half dozen parents and students representing the Cecilia High School varsity soccer program made emotional and sometimes spirited appeals to the St. Martin School Board last week for the inclusion of soccer striping on the new football field under construction at the school.
The striping was included in the original specifications but has since been deleted.
The cost of the striping was estimated to run between $9,000 and $13,000.
