City’s LACE program yields traffic tickets

It’s been 30 days since the city council here approved a trial of the Local Agency Compensated Enforcement (LACE) program and Police Chief Ricky Martin provided an update on its results at the Sept. 17 council meeting.
The LACE program funds extra patrol time for off-duty officers, paid for through the citations generated. In that 30-day period, 210 traffic tickets were issued by the extra patrol officers provided, but Chief Martin was not sure just how much revenue the tickets would generate.

It’s HOT Pepper time in the ’Ville

The 27th St. Martinville Kiwanis Pepper Festival begins Thursday, Sept. 13, at 5 p.m. on the Festival grounds along Bayou Teche with carnival rides for family night.
Entrance to the Festival for Friday and Saturday is $5 for adults and $1 for children. Pets and ice chests will not be allowed on the Festival grounds. Gates open at 5 p.m. on Friday.
The Pepper Festival has everything you could want in a festival – lots of music and dancing, food, beverages, arts and crafts.

CLECO likely pick to provide power to city

Although the decision has not been made official, consultant Jim Poché, of Poché, Prouet and Associates, told the St. Martinville city council Monday that it appears CLECO has tendered the most advantageous bid for providing wholesale electricity to the city.
The official vote was postponed until Thursday to allow Mayor Melinda Mitchell, council members and City Attorney Allan Durand to examine the bids, which were delivered and opened during a meeting at Poché’s Lafayette office only four hours before the Monday council meeting.

Beebe out . . .or not?

By a 6-4 vote in the closing minutes of last week’s monthly meeting of the St. Martin School Board, members terminated the employment of Superintendent Dr. Lottie Beebe.
The action created some confusion, sparked heated debate and prompted a stinging address by Beebe’s attorney.
And since the meeting and conferences between Lafayette attorney Lane Roy, retained by Beebe, and board legal adviser Mark Boyer, Roy has raised a number of issues he says makes last week’s board action illegal and void.
