Replacement for levee road?

Officials meeting here on Tuesday concluded that a completely new road is needed along the Atchafalaya Basin West Protection Levee south of Henderson.
Portions of the existing roadway (LA 352/Henderson Levee Road) has been restricted to one lane for the past two years due to several dirt slides on the portion of the levee below the asphalt road.

Lawsuits entangle pipeline project

A flurry of lawsuits filed locally in the 16th Judicial District Court have the potential of delaying the completion of the controversial Bayou Bridge Pipeline project that runs through the southern portion of Upper St. Martin Parish.
Construction of the pipeline has drawn protests from environmental groups and individual property owners along portions of the project, which stretches 163 miles between Lake Charles and St. James. But company officials have said they expect the project to be completed by October.

LASUCA EXPANSION — The first phase of a five-year plan to increase the LaSuCa sugar mill’s refining capacity is underway. About 10 percent more acreage of cane is expected at the St. John mill during the upcoming harvest season. The blue structure, a new continuous evaporator, will be lifted into place before grinding begins.

LaSuCa mill expanding

The LaSuCa sugar mill at St. John is anything but quiet during this off-season. Along with the usual repair and maintenance required between grinding seasons, the mill is swarming with workers bringing about the first phase of a multi-year expansion in the historic mill’s capacity.

Improvement noted on local LEAP scores

State Superintendent of Education John White last week announced the results of the Louisiana Educational Assessment Program (LEAP) testing for 2018 in Louisiana schools.
The target is that students have to average mastery and meet other academic targets by 2025 for a school to be A-rated.
The five scoring levels of the LEAP exams are advanced, mastery, basic, approaching basic and unsatisfactory.

Spoil site found for Catahoula dredging

St. Martin Parish President Chester Cedars said that a suitable location to dispose of material from the planned deepening of the silted Catahoula Lake has probably been secured.
At the July 10 parish council meeting, members gave Cedars approval to sign a contract for the needed servitude agreements. He said the location, which belongs to Jackie Theriot, should make the permitting process move ahead more smoothly.
