New mayor’s first meeting draws crowd

Monday’s city council meeting was the first for newly installed Mayor Melinda Mitchell and it was standing room only at city hall. A light agenda and Mitchell’s easy-going nature made for a smooth christening of the new administration.
At the mayor’s request, the council approved a change of firms to conduct municipal audits. “I think it would be a good idea to have a fresh set of eyes looking at our finances,” she said. Kolder, Slaven and Co. LLC will take over the city audit contract, replacing Champagne and Co. LLC of Breaux Bridge.

Collette gets salary boosted to $52,800

At a special meeting held Monday evening, Henderson aldermen voted unanimously to increase Mayor Sherbin Collette’s salary by $4,800 per year.
The 10 percent hike will boost his annual pay from $48,000 to $52,800, effective July 1.
Collette and aldermen Wil White and Bill Legrand huddled behind closed doors before the official meeting opened. When Mayor Pro Tem Jody Meche arrived, he joined the group, along with town attorney Jerry Mallet, while Legrand exited.

Shock pad dispute delays BB gridiron

A special school board meeting Monday afternoon failed to resolve a holdup in the installation of artificial turf on the Breaux Bridge High football field.
A contract with Geo Surfaces of Baton Rouge, a firm that installed the St. Martinville Sr. High turf and dozens of other athletic fields, called for completion of the project by July 1. But a dispute over the shock pad that supports the artificial turf has the project bogged down.

Pepper Capital bill hits snag

While a bill to designate St. Martinville as the “Pepper Capital of the World” sailed through the House of Representatives during the recent session of the Louisiana Legislature, it never made it to the Senate floor.
State Sen. Fred Mills said there was some concern from Iberia Parish interests and the McIlhenny Co. over such a designation for St. Martinville.
The McIlhenny Co., producer of the world famous Tabasco Hot Sauce, is celebrating its 150th anniversary this year and is a major tourist draw in Iberia Parish.
