DFW tells of weed control plans for Henderson Lake

Representatives with the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) presented an update on the department’s plans for a drawdown of Henderson Lake at the May 15 St. Martin Parish Council meeting.
LDWF Biologist Manager Brac Salyers explained that the lake is particularly vulnerable to the overgrowth of invasive plant species, the most troublesome being hydrilla, water hyacinth and giant salvinia. He said that, while last winter’s unusually low temperatures may delay the growth somewhat, control measures are needed to prevent problems later in the year.

City wants vehicles off old Walmart lot

The city will soon notify the owners of trucks and other unauthorized vehicles left in the closed Walmart parking lot that they must find another place to park.
Dist. 2 councilman Craig Prosper introduced a measure barring unauthorized parking there to stop asphalt damage by large trucks. The building is now owned by the city and businesses have shown an interest in leasing space in the building or parking lot for retail or fast food locations.

Fire District coordinator resigns

Brian Castille, coordinator for the St. Martin Parish Fire District, has resigned from his post.
Few details were available at this time, but some sources have told the Teche News that the resignations of some volunteers resulted in a high degree of stress for department officials and a higher level of scrutiny from parish government.
Earlier in the year, some firefighters had voiced concerns about the condition of department equipment and the adequacy of the training program. At that time, Castille said equipment issues had already been rectified.

Graduation rate up at parish schools

Statistics released last week by the state Department of Education show St. Martin Parish public high schools graduating a good percentage of students.
The report on cohort graduation (calculated on the number of entering freshmen graduating in four years, based on the 2017 senior class) shows that 83.7 percent of the local freshmen who started high school in 2013 graduated in 2017.
This is an improvement over the 2016 graduation rate of 81.4 percent and ranks St. Martin Parish third in the Acadiana region, trailing only Acadia and Evangeline parishes.
