Parks closer to new Village Hall

Bond agents for the Village of Parks have made a tentative deal to secure a buyer for a $1.2 million bond issue to finance construction of a new village hall. The revenue bond will be repaid with proceeds generated from the Parks water system.
At the May 8 council meeting, bond attorney Brendon Black and financial advisor Deatriz Riggins reported that the deal awaits final approval by the mayor and village legal advisor Robert Chevalier.

Effort on to establish Cecilia ‘Cultural District’

Representatives from the Cecilia community, speaking at the May 1 St. Martin Parish Council meeting, presented the case for officially adding part of the area to the list of Louisiana Cultural Districts.
Spokesperson Paula Calais Ohlmeyer and musician Laura Berard Huval made enthusiastic presentations describing the unique cultural history of the area and potential benefits for the proposed district, Cecilia and the entire parish.

Another successful festival!

Celebrating 58 years since the first Crawfish Festival, Parc Hardy was filled this past weekend with locals who hosted mini family reunions along with visitors from all over the world.
It was another successful Crawfish Festival for the record books, as people showed up early and stayed late. There was plenty of food, Cajun/Zydeco music, arts and crafts vendors and carnival rides. The festival celebrates the crawfish, Cajun language, culture and music and is held the first weekend in May.

It’s ‘Madam Mayor’ for Mitchell

For the first time in 12 years the city will soon have a new mayor.
In last Saturday’s run-off election, voters chose Melinda “Mel” Narcisse Mitchell to replace Thomas Nelson, who has served in the post since 2006 but lost his bid for a fourth term.
It was Mitchell’s third attempt to unseat Nelson and it proved to be the charm. With a turnout of 49 percent, Mitchell won 1,153 votes (54%) to Nelson’s 999 (46%).
