I-10 concerns draw crowd to HAMA meeting

With recent flooding at the I-10 exits affecting their businesses, a meeting of the Henderson Area Merchants Assn. at Crawfish Town restaurant last Wednesday attracted a larger crowd than expected. Along with business owners, Parish President Chester Cedars, Mayor Sherbin Collette and other officials attended.

Free recycle day Saturday

Time to gain yourself a little elbow room for the new year. This Saturday, Jan. 19, Project Front Yard, the St. Martin Parish Libraries and the Sheriff’s Office will hold the parish’s fourth annual free recycling day.
From 8 a.m. to noon, volunteers will be waiting at the Emergency Preparedness Office, 4870 LA 31/Main Hwy, the corner of the Cypress Island Extension and Main Hwy, near Parks.

Hardy headed for La. Hall of Fame

Officials with the Louisiana Political Hall of Fame last week announced that Cecilia native Paul J. Hardy will be among the 2019 inductees into the Hall of Fame during a ceremony in Baton Rouge next month.
A former state senator, secretary of state, lieutenant governor and secretary of the Louisiana Department of Transportation, Hardy is one of seven Louisiana residents receiving this year’s honor.
Hardy, 76, is a graduate of Cecilia High School, USL (UL-Lafayette) and the Loyola University Law School.

Lisa Nelson chosen to chair parish council

By a unanimous vote the St. Martin Parish Council chose District 2 representative Lisa Nelson to serve as council chairperson for 2019.
With her election at the Jan. 8 council meeting, Nelson will assume the office held for the past year by Jason Willis of District 3. She is already familiar with the task after serving as chairman in 2014.
Dean LeBlanc of District 8 will continue as vice chairman and District 9 representative Daniel Richard will remain as temporary presiding officer.

A VETERANS DAY CELEBRATION

was held on Sunday, Nov. 11, in Breaux Bridge. This year marked the 100th anniversary of the end of WWI. The St. Francis of Assisi Jr. Knights of Peter Claver Council 49 presented WWII veterans (top photo from left) Remi Kidder, A.D. Durio, Sid Hardy, Lionel “T-Frere” Nichols and Isaac “Bin” Huval with awards, thanking them for their service. Bottom photo, a musical performance by Brazos Huval School of Music and St. Bernard Catholic School students honored those who have served in the military.
