BB family members face muliple charges

Breaux Bridge – Walter Glenn Soileau, 69, and three members of his family have been arrested by St. Martin Sheriff’s deputies as a result of an investigation launched in August.
The investigation began when the owners of a local business reported that they suspected employees of embezzling company funds. It was discovered that Jean Soileau, 38, and Kendra Duplechain Soileau, 38, had illegally diverted money into their personal accounts through a variety of schemes.

A CONSTRUCTION CRANE working on Interstate 10 at Mile Marker 117 in St. Martin Parish (near Bayou Amy) collapsed around 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 25, crushing the front end of a vehicle and injuring the driver. For unknown reasons the crane’s boom tilted backwards and fell onto the roadway, blocking the westbound lane for several hours. The driver was airlifted to an area hospital with moderate injuries. Louisiana State Police troopers are handling the ongoing investigation.(Henderson Police Dept.)

Parish bridge work underway, planned

Parish President Chester Cedars reminds area residents that the pontoon bridge at Butte LaRose is closed for repairs through Thursday, Oct. 4. At the Sept. 18 Parish Council committee meeting, Cedars said state bridge inspections will be carried out in October and if the structure is not repaired by then it could be closed down for a much longer period.

READY TO ROLL – Trucks belonging to the sugarcane hauling fleet operated by the LaSuCa sugar mill at St. John are lined up and ready to begin the 2018 harvest, expected to start on either Friday or Saturday. The mill operates nearly 100 of the 18-wheelers and expects to process 1,360,000 tons of cane collected from growers in St. Martin and eight surrounding parishes.

Cane harvest set to begin

The LaSuCa sugar mill’s fleet of 100 or so 18-wheel trucks are expected to begin hauling sugarcane to the mill at St. John this Friday or Saturday, kicking of the annual harvest season that will last well into December or early January.
LaSuCa General Manager Mike Comb said Monday the starting date had not yet been firmed up but would certainly be no later than Saturday.

Beebe, board reach settlement

The St. Martin School Board and former Superintendent Dr. Lottie Beebe have apparently reached a settlement following the termination of her employment earlier this month.
Details of the agreement have not been released but Mark Boyer, the board’s legal adviser, says the board has “agreed in principle” to a settlement “to avoid expected litigation costs. That resolution would result in Dr. Beebe being placed on administrative leave with pay until her retirement next year.”
