73rd Rotary Ball is this Saturday

St. Martinville – The Rotary Club of St. Martinville will stage its 73rd annual Mardi Gras Ball this Saturday, Feb, 23, at the Cade Community Center.
The theme of this year’s ball will be A Night at the Grand Opera, featuring music from 20 of the world’s most popular operas.

Parish Council fills key positions

As of Feb. 11, the key positions of director of administration and director of public works for St. Martin Parish will be filled by new appointees.
At the Feb. 5 parish council meeting, the appointment of Martin Poirrier as director of administration and Calder “Pop” Hebert as director of public works were approved.
Poirrier has been involved in a number of projects for the parish as a project director for Duplantis Design Group of Lafayette. Before that he worked as an assistant director of public works for Lafayette government.

Loose chickens annoy Henderson residents

Chickens running loose in a Henderson neighborhood have residents sick and tired of hosing off their porches and walkways.
At the Feb. 11 town council meeting, Mayor Sherbin Collette said he has again been getting calls complaining about the free-running poultry. “We don’t have a problem with people keeping chickens,” he said, “But they have to be in pens.”

First ‘town hall’ meet focuses on flooding

The first of Mayor Melinda Mitchell’s scheduled town hall meetings was held in the Magnolia Park recreation center on Tuesday, Jan. 29. Mitchell told the Teche News she plans to hold two meetings for each of the city’s five districts during 2019.
Tuesday’s two-hour session for Dist. 1 residents featured a presentation on flooding issues by Harold Schoeffler, chairman of the Acadian Group of the Sierra Club’s Delta Chapter. Schoeffler reviewed the results of his research into the causes of the 2016 flooding event and offered suggestions for mitigating the threat.

SPECIAL EVENT — There were smiles all around when Father Michael Champagne of the Community of Jesus Crucified snipped the ribbon to mark the opening of the Oratory Don Bosco on Port Street in St. Martinville last week. The facility, a division of the St. Teresa Center of Mercy, will serve the youth of the community with religious, recreational and life skill programs.(Submitted)

CJC opens facility to serve local youngsters

St. Martinville – Father Michael Champagne and the Community of Jesus Crucified celebrated the opening of a new youth center in St. Martinville with a blessing and ribbon-cutting ceremony last Thursday.
The Oratory Don Bosco, located at 515 West Port Street, will serve as a safe place for boys and girls to learn about God and prayer in a recreational setting. This summer it will offer summer Bible Camps and in the fall after-school care where youths can get help with homework.
