It’s been more than 50 years since the ongoing school desegregation case was filed, and the St. Martin School Board is still struggling to meet a myriad of mandates imposed by federal courts.
And while it appeared the parish had met all requirements in the early 1970s, it was later discovered that the case had never been formally closed and plaintiffs, assisted by attorneys with the U.S. Department of Justice and the NAACP Legal Defense & Educational Fund Inc., petitioned to reactivate the lawsuit.

The city will host a celebration of the historic arrival of the  Acadian settlers in the home of Evangeline on Saturday, March 16.
Beginning with the raising of the Acadian flag and singing of the Acadian national anthem, Ave Maris Stella at 9:45 a.m., it will be a full day featuring the traditions, culture and good food that make Acadiana the unique environment it is.
The procession of the familiar name banners at 12:30 p.m. will serve as a reminder of the descendents of those first French-Canadian settlers of the Attakapa District who still populate this area.

Residents and people with commercial interests along the city’s busy Rees Street corridor would like to see major improvements made to the city’s gateway off Interstate 10.
Consultant Mike Hollier of the Acadiana Planning Commission (APC) and representatives from the engineering firm Neel-Schaffer presented results of a public hearing about an improvement study made of the busy thoroughfare to Mayor Ricky Calais and council members at the monthly council meeting last week.
