Lady ’Dogs finish unbeaten in 5-4A

Cecilia High’s Lady Bulldog basketball team opened the 2017-18 season by losing their first four games. But coach Jasmine Narcisse’s squad shook off the early defeats and proceeded to win their remaining 22 games and sweep to a 10-0 championship in District 5-4A action.
The Lady ’Dogs wrapped up regular season play last week by beating parish rivals St. Martinville (49-32) and Breaux Bridge (53-41) and now turn their attention to the playoffs.
As of last Friday Cecilia was ranked No. 17 in the LHSAA’s unofficial Class 4A power ratings.

Health Unit offers no cost flu shots

The Louisiana Department of Health will continue to offer flu vaccines at no cost at parish health units across the state through Monday, Feb. 12. The vaccine is available to anyone who has not yet received a vaccine this flu season.
Because of the level of flu activity and the success of the no-cost flu clinics held last week when more than 2,800 vaccines were administered at more than 60 locations across the state, the Department is extending this effort to meet the demand and need for flu vaccinations in Louisiana.

Pay supplement on school board agenda

Members of the St. Martin School Board are scheduled to discuss a possible salary supplement for the system’s 1,000-plus employees during their monthly meeting today (Wednesday).
The board’s Finance Committee will meet at 4 p.m. in the Administrative Office on Corporate Boulevard with the full board convening at 5 p.m.
An additional one-time salary supplement of as much as $1,000 has been brought up several times over the past few months without any action being taken.

Mardi Gras Festival this weekend in St. M’ville

The Newcomers Club of St. Martinville will stage its inaugural Mardi Gras Festival this Sunday, Feb. 11, at the city’s festival grounds along Bayou Teche.
The grounds will be open from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. with food, craft vendors, local dancing groups and music for entertainment.
Bands scheduled to perform include Grand Slam Band (noon to 2 p.m.), Donna Angelle (3 to 5 p.m.), Kamesha Cole & Soul Konnection (6 to 8 p.m.), and Danger and the Zydeco All Stars (9 to 11 p.m.).
The Untouchable Dance Group will performs at 2:30 p.m. and the Twirling Divas at 5:30 p.m.

Major improvements set for LA 31/Main Hwy

Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) officials announced Monday that two major highway improvements projects in St. Martin Parish are scheduled to get underway within the next week.
Construction should begin on Thursday, Feb. 1, on a $3.07 million project to construct a roundabout at the intersection of LA 31/Main Hwy and LA 92-1/Smede Hwy just south of St. Martinville.
The work is estimated to take place daily from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., weather permitting.
