Court grants modified order against Mitchell

In a hearing before Judge Lewis Pitman in 16th Judicial District Court on July 23, the city was handed a partial win in its case against Lawrence “Nanny” Mitchell.
The court action followed a decision by the council to seek an injunction forbidding Mitchell from entering city buildings or grounds and from interacting with city employees other than his wife during working hours.

– A steady drizzle Tuesday morning didn’t keep supporters from crowding onto the St. Martin Hospital grounds to witness the ground breaking for the 30,000 sq. ft. addition that will more than double the facility’s capacity. Among the dignitaries present were, from left, St. Martin Parish Clerk of Court Becky Patin; Dr. Warren Degatur, Senator Fred Mills, Rebekah Gee, Secretary of the La. St. Martinville Tourism Director Elaine Clement has raised the alarm that the trademark Evangeline Oak is in need of maintenance. The the ancient live oak is dangerously entwined with vines and the long-term health of the tree could be at risk. Clement said she will consult with LSU AgCenter Extension Agent Stuart Gauthier about the tree this week. Private funding will be sought to cover the approximate $2,000 cost of hiring a licensed arborist to remedy the problem. (Karl Jeter)

Pelican answers to parish government

Pelican Waste Removal General Manager Roddie Matherne has assured St. Martin Parish Government and unincorporated-area customers that cart delivery and collection issues will soon be over.
Under criticism at the July 16 parish council meeting, held at the Public Library here, Matherne apologized to parish officials and customers.
The council chose Pelican’s contract proposal over one submitted by Waste Management in a 6-3 vote on May 7. Councilmen Dean LeBlanc, Byron Fuselier and Daniel Richard cast the dissenting votes.

Council to seek injunction against mayor’s husband

If the city council here gets its way, it could soon be illegal for Mayor Melinda Mitchell’s husband, Lawrence “Nanny” Mitchell, to enter any city building or surrounding grounds, or to interact with any city official other than his wife.
At a special meeting on July 18, a resolution directing city attorney Allan Durand to request an injunction to that effect was approved by a 3-1 vote.
