Cecilia area officials are planning a ribbon cutting ceremony for the spanking new CHS Bulldog Football Stadium before Friday’s opening season game against St. Martinville.
The ceremony marking the start of a new Cecilia tradition is set for 4:30 p.m. Fans will be able to tour the new field and facilities until 5:30 when preparations begin for the game.
The new field is located directly behind (north) the main classroom/office complex.
At 6:45 families of past coaches will release balloons in honor of their loved ones’ contributions to Cecilia High athletics.
The back flow-prevention barge blocking Bayou Chene for the past three months has been refloated and removed and is no longer preventing marine traffic from moving to and from the Atchafalaya River.
Removal of the barge was completed on Aug. 27.
The barge had been in place for three months, the third time it has been moved into position to prevent rising water from the Atchafalaya River from flooding low lying portions of Lower St. Martin, Assumption, St. Mary, Lafourche, Terrebonne and Iberville Parishes.
After the passage of a resolution on Aug. 13 made it official, a proposal for a one-cent sales tax increase within city limits will go before voters here on Nov. 16.
The issue received unanimous support of council members at last week’s council meeting. If approved by voters, it will be the first increase to the city’s existing one-cent sales tax in 46 years. Mayor Ricky Calais said he regards the increase as a necessary step in keeping the progress of the city on track.
Adjourned, but not over – Mayor Melinda Mitchell gathered her papers and walked out after declaring “this meeting is over” halfway through Monday’s St. Martinville City Council meeting. But the meeting continued with Mayor Pro Tempore Craig Prosper presiding.(Karl Jeter)
Monday’s meeting of the St. Martinville City Council was another three-hour marathon, but half of it was carried out without Mayor Melinda Mitchell and two council members.
As a contentious set of agenda items critical of Building and Zoning Director Shedrick Berard proceeded, the mayor became angry, banged the gavel hard and declared the meeting over. She gathered her papers and walked out, joined by Councilmen Edmond Joseph and Juma Johnson. But Mayor Pro Tempore Craig Prosper moved to the mayor’s seat and the meeting continued.
