Acadian Historical Festival March 16

The city will host a celebration of the historic arrival of the  Acadian settlers in the home of Evangeline on Saturday, March 16.
Beginning with the raising of the Acadian flag and singing of the Acadian national anthem, Ave Maris Stella at 9:45 a.m., it will be a full day featuring the traditions, culture and good food that make Acadiana the unique environment it is.
The procession of the familiar name banners at 12:30 p.m. will serve as a reminder of the descendents of those first French-Canadian settlers of the Attakapa District who still populate this area.

Improvements considered for Rees corridor

Residents and people with commercial interests along the city’s busy Rees Street corridor would like to see major improvements made to the city’s gateway off Interstate 10.
Consultant Mike Hollier of the Acadiana Planning Commission (APC) and representatives from the engineering firm Neel-Schaffer presented results of a public hearing about an improvement study made of the busy thoroughfare to Mayor Ricky Calais and council members at the monthly council meeting last week.

Going up – Construction of the new Parks City Hall is proceeding quickly. The roof dry-in, expected by the end of February, will allow work to continue regardless of weather. Contractor J.C. Construction expects to have the $920,000 structure complete in early spring. (Mary L. Terry)

Parks officials considering village broadband option

The Village of Parks is considering a proposal to allow Cajun Broadband to extend service there.
A company representative was at the Feb. 11 council meeting to inform the public and council about the possibilities and was given the go-ahead to prepare a detailed proposal.

73rd Rotary Ball is this Saturday

St. Martinville – The Rotary Club of St. Martinville will stage its 73rd annual Mardi Gras Ball this Saturday, Feb, 23, at the Cade Community Center.
The theme of this year’s ball will be A Night at the Grand Opera, featuring music from 20 of the world’s most popular operas.

Parish Council fills key positions

As of Feb. 11, the key positions of director of administration and director of public works for St. Martin Parish will be filled by new appointees.
At the Feb. 5 parish council meeting, the appointment of Martin Poirrier as director of administration and Calder “Pop” Hebert as director of public works were approved.
Poirrier has been involved in a number of projects for the parish as a project director for Duplantis Design Group of Lafayette. Before that he worked as an assistant director of public works for Lafayette government.
