City budgets OKed Monday

In a brief council meeting before a nearly-empty chamber Monday afternoon, city officials adopted the amended budget for the fiscal year that ended at midnight, June 30 as well as the projected budget for FY 2019-20.
The budgets were adopted with three council members (Mike Fuselier, Juma Johnson and Edmond Joseph) absent and Mayor Melinda Mitchell providing the necessary quorum vote. Mayor protem Craig Prosper and Councilman Dennis Paul Williams cast the other two votes.

Book tells of local airman’s WW II service

Many men who fought in World War II returned home and never spoke about their experiences serving their country during war time. In 2001, as part of a writing class assignment, former educator Dolores Hernandez Mills interviewed Cecilia native TSGT. Fred E. Cormier, flight engineer/gunner in the U.S. Army Air Force’s 459th Bomb Group (B-24 Liberators), about his experiences as an airman and prisoner of war.

Procedural snags delay Catahoula dredging project

Silting of slow-moving waterways is a long-standing problem in South Louisiana. It can limit usefulness of previously popular recreational areas, impede access to camps and restrict storm water flow.
One of the more extreme examples of excess silting in St. Martin Parish is Catahoula Lake.
As discussed at the June 18 parish council meeting at the Catahoula Multi-Purpose Building, the long-needed dredging of the lake is turning into a test of wills pitting parish government against state and federal regulatory authorities.

Amended city budget shows small surplus

The city’s amended budget for fiscal year 2018-2019 was presented by auditor Burton Kolder and tentatively accepted by the city council at a June 24 meeting.
The budget shows an operating surplus of $56,000 on total income of $10,096,790 with expenses of $10,958,963, leaving an operating deficit of $856,000.
But the deficit was reconciled with capital lease and depreciation offsets resulting in the small surplus.

Parish trying to untangle garbage change confusion

St. Martin Parish Government has its hands full dealing with irate calls and misunderstandings about the pending trash collection changes.
At the Parish Council’s committee meetings, held this month at the Catahoula Multi-purpose center last week, Parish President Chester Cedars and council members took steps to lay some of the issues to rest.
