Calais sees need for sales tax hike

City officials here are preparing to try to do something that is never easy – convince residents to increase their own taxes.
At the July 9 council meeting, Mayor Ricky Calais offered a preview of the case to be made over the coming months that it’s time to make that difficult decision. Calais said that, while everybody likes low taxes, the city-wide sales tax of one cent on the dollar is not sufficient to keep up with the needs of a growing community.

New city hall in Parks is nearing completion

If the weekend arrival of tropical storm Barry doesn’t delay the remaining tasks needed to finish the new city hall, the August meeting of the Village Council might be held in the new building.
Mayor Kevin Kately led several people on an impromptu tour of the building after the July 9 meeting, and residents will probably be pleased with the new facility. Kately believes the new center of village government will make a more favorable impression on residents and businesses looking for potential locations.

BLAST FROM BARRY — SLEMCO crews worked to repair downed power lines along LA353/Cypress Island Hwy northwest of St. Martinville last Sunday as Hurricane/Tropical Storm Barry slogged its way through the Acadiana area. Winds gusting to 75 mph knocked over a large tree (at left) onto the power line. SLEMCO customers in the Cypress Island area were without power for almost 24 hours but damage from the storm was mostly limited to downed trees and minor flooding. Our Lady of Mercy in Henderson, 5pm Saturday

Curfew For St. Martin Parish Will Be Imposed Beginning Tonight
In the interest of public safety, St. Martin Parish President, Chester R. Cedars has declared a curfew for all of St. Martin Parish on Saturday night from dusk to dawn on Sunday morning.
