St. Martinville gets new CFO

Supervision of St. Martinville’s finances was officially transferred to newly appointed “Chief Administration/Secretary-Treasurer” Avis Gutekunst during a special meeting of the city council Monday afternoon.
Gutekunst, a certified public acountant, will be tasked with remedying a number of problems that have developed over the past several months.
Past-due invoices and payments to neglected accounts will need to be updated and a more complete picture of the city’s current financial status developed.

WWII vet recalls Utah Beach, battles across France

Tomorrow, June 6, marks the 75th anniversary of D-Day in World War II, when Allied Forces launched Operation Overlord, sending troops onto five critical landing zones along the English Channel’s French coast.
American units were assigned two of the five beaches targeted in the 1944 invasion – Omaha and Utah on the western flank of the landing area.

Officials ease ‘worse case’ fears of Morganza opening

Citing a revised forecast that the overtopping of the Morganza Spillway will occur later than previously forecast, the Corps of Engineers has announced that the opening of the structure is now scheduled to begin on Sunday, June 9.
On May 28, soon after the original opening date of June 2 was announced, a meeting was held at the Butte LaRose fire station where an overflow crowd turned out to hear current flooding projections for Butte LaRose and the surrounding area.

Chaotic meeting lasts 3½ hours

Before an overfilled City Hall meeting room, a year of mishaps, criticism and toxic relationships came to a head here Monday evening.
Even though the city is phasing in stricter rules of conduct for council proceedings, the first June meeting descended into what was mostly an unpleasant 3½-hour spectacle. Over the course of the meeting, several residents were ejected by police for violating new policies against arguing with or shouting at council members.

— Parish crews raised the decking of the pontoon bridge accessing Butte La Rose from the West Atchafalaya Protection Levee this past Sunday due to the rising level of water in the canal that drains Henderson Lake into the Basin. Parish officials say the crossing will be closed to traffic for an indefinite period, forcing local residents to detour via La3177/Atchafalaya River Hwy and I-10.(Sally Angelle)
