Louis Champagne

St. Martinville – A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, September 29, 2018, at St. Martin de Tours Catholic Church for Louis Champagne, who passed away on Monday, September 24, 2018, at the age of 100 at The Carpenter House St. Joseph Hospice.
The family requests that visiting hours be observed at the funeral home from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Friday and continue on Saturday at 8 a.m. until 9:30 a.m.
A rosary will be prayed at 7 p.m. on Friday.
Rev. Ed Degeyter will officiate at the Mass of Christian Burial.
Interment will follow at St. Michael Cemetery in St. Martinville.
Louis was born on February 24, 1918, in Parks, La. to the late René and Celestine Melancon Champagne. He worked in agriculture all is life and through his trucking company Louis provided work to small farmers for many years. His skill in gardening and bee keeping supplied vegetables, honey and vegetable plants to many surrounding parishes. Louis worked as a field man for B.F. Trappey’s until he retired at the age of 76.
He was a man a few words, humble, kind, and strong in his faith. He was a loving father who made many sacrifices so that his children could better themselves through higher education. Louis will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. The family would like to thank his sitter, Beverly Manser for her loyalty, love and care.
He is survived by his daughters, Velma Hanks and husband Carl, and Jackie Cassidy and husband Robert; sons, Gerald Champagne and wife Virginia, Jimmy Champagne and wife Teetsie, and Charlie Champagne and wife Charlene; 12 grandchildren, Jennifer Salas, John Champagne, Kabby Thompson, Ann Champagne, Thomas Champagne, Julie Hanks, Elizabeth Dunbar, Joe Hanks, Meghan Myers, Caitlin DeVillier, Erin Cassidy and Shannon Cassidy; and 19 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 70 years, Marie Boudreaux Champagne; his parents; granddaughter, Stephanie Champagne Herbsleb; grandson, Kevin Champagne; brothers, A.J. “Bon” and Richard Champagne; and sisters, Lucy Champagne, Julie Cormier, Lucette Broussard, Cecile Vincent and Theresa Daspit.
Pallbearers will be Gerald Champagne, Jimmy Champagne, Charlie Champagne, Robert Cassidy, Carl Hanks and Walter Boudreaux.
Honorary pallbearer will be Jesse Champagne.
