Dr. Marshall “Bubba” Marvin Poor Jr.
Dr. Marshall “Bubba” Marvin Poor Jr.
Born in Breaux Bridge, Louisiana, Dr. Poor grew up working alongside his father in their family-owned funeral home. He earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. He went on to receive his medical degree from Louisiana State University School of Medicine and completed his residency at the University of Iowa. He began his career as a neurosurgeon in Paducah, Kentucky, before ultimately making Bloomington, IN his home, where he opened his own practice and faithfully served the community for over 35 years alongside his partner, Souheil Haddad.
Known affectionately as “Bubba,” Dr. Poor was not only a gifted physician but a legend to those who knew him. He was selfless in every sense of the word, consistently putting others before himself. Even on his patients’ worst days, they were met with the very best version of him; steady, compassionate, and fully present. He was widely admired for his exceptional bedside manner and the genuine care he showed each person entrusted to him. His warmth, thoughtful nature, and unmistakable sense of humor left a lasting impression on everyone he met. A lifelong learner, his mind was filled with endless trivia and curiosity about the world.
His strength extended far beyond his profession. After courageously facing and enduring cancer last year, he continued to live and serve others with the same quiet resilience and grace that defined his life.
Outside of his work, he found joy in life’s simple and meaningful pleasures. He loved his 64 acres, “the farm,” which served as his sanctuary. He found peace in the time he spent there and in making it his own. He also enjoyed painting, caring for his pets, following sports, listening to music, drinking coffee all day, reading, and traveling. Above all, he treasured time with his family.
Dr. Poor is survived by his beloved wife, Lacye Poor; his sister, Brenda Poor; his children (15), Rachel, Nicholas, Maddie (Nick), Lilly, Bo (Michelle), Julia (Victor), Victoria, Allison (Jeremiah), Grant, William (Cassie), Austin (Lucy), Lauren, Lisa, Luke, and Landon; and his cherished grandchildren (17), Ava, Hayden, Layna, Olivia, Wesley, Jonathan, Seth, William, Aria, Brent, Lacy, Jimmer, Lyla, Gilbert, Benjamin, Tucker, and Clara.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Marshall Marvin Poor and Joyce Needham Poor, and his sister, Belinda Poor. Dr. Poor’s legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched; as a physician, a friend, and a devoted family man. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
