100 Years Ago October 8, 1926

The Star Route service by the Teche bus lines was changed on Wednesday. The morning mail arrived here at 6:30 and the afternoon mail left here at 5:20. All mails from east and west will arrive in the morning mail.

We have heard several complaints against the cotton buyers not paying the price for cotton, they are taking advantage of the depressed condition of the market, and simply pay the producer what they pleased. One man was offered 7 cents for his cotton, he sent it to New Orleans and got 15 cents. The Planters around Parks were offered 6 and 7 cents for their cotton, went to Lafayette and sold the same cotton at 10 and 11 cents, making a difference of $10 to $20 per bale. This is simply outrageous.

We find the Parish jail in first class condition thoroughly clean and sanitary.

An ordinance of the Police Jury should be adopted requiring that rear lights be placed on all vehicles using the public road after dark.

The Pointe Claire bridge is in a dangerous condition and is now impossible for use to traffic, the bridge at Parks is in urgent need of repairs.

The weather Wednesday morning was cold enough to make heavy clothes comfortable. The pepper crop is in its best now, and an early frost will be disastrous to this crop, which is proving this season, one of the best.

The pepper kiln of the Evangeline Pepper Products, was destroyed at about one o’clock Thursday afternoon. The kiln had been filled with red peppers to go through the drying process, when in some manner not determined, the building took fire, and with the content, was completely destroyed.

50 Years Ago October 6, 1976

The huge swing gates of the Henderson Control Structure were opened on the recommendation of Wildlife and Fisheries fish biologists, who felt a drawdown of the water level (from 7.5 feet to 5 feet) in Henderson Lake would benefit fishing conditions.

Approximately 60 Catahoula residents met and elected a committee to study the feasibility of incorporating the community of Catahoula.

Officers of Beta Rho chapter of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority in St. Martinville were Cheryl Theriot, president; Bobbie Theriot, vice president; Charlotte Durand, recording secretary; Charlotte Chataignier, corresponding secretary; Sydney Durand, civil defense; Peggy Hardy, extension officer; Pearl Bienvenue, treasurer; Elaine Case, parliamentarian; and Hattie Maraist, sponsor.

Pat Johnson of Cecilia was a member of the USL band’s Rifle Corps.

Breaux Bridge 9th grade 4-H officers included Brian Angelle, president; Dale Huval, vice president; Sharon Brasseaux, secretary; Eugene, Chauffe, reporter; Connie Angelle, girl song leader; and Butch Castille, boy song leader.

Serving as cheerleaders for the Cecilia Sr. High athletic teams were Tina Hebert, Mona Steiner, Penny Angelle, Lisa Enard, Gina Mayo and Laura Landry.

Breaux Bridge Sr. High cheerleaders were Susan Castille, Abbey Breaux, Renee Dupuy, Kelly Calais, Ava Angelle, Leslie Thomassee and Tina Brasseaux.

St. Martin Academy cheerleaders were Mary Margaret Bienvenu, Donna Hulin, Gisele Vincent, Tammy Hulin, Vickie Delcambre, Liz Gary and Ann Landry.

40 Years Ago October 8, 1986

Parish sugar producers honored as district award recipients in the Louisiana Sugarcane High Yield Awards were Patrick Laperouse, Adam and Bernard Laviolette and Russell, Ryan and Curry Albert.

New officers of the Beta Rho chapter of Beta Sigma Phi were Elaine Case, president; Elaine Perioux, vice president; Bobbie Theriot, corresponding secretary: Yvette Greig, recording secretary; Syd Durand, civil defense; Louella Champagne, extension officer; Debbie Hebert, treasurer; and Charlotte Durand, parliamentarian.

25 Years Ago October 9, 2001

Cecilia High coeds chosen to serve on the school’s 2001 Homecoming court included Kristina Imhoff, Andrea Jeffery, Alacia McGee, Jauvaughn Riser, Iris Frederick, Estelle Latiolais, Tiffany Francis, Latoya Senegal, Jamie LeBlanc, Kristie Zenon, Rhonda Batiste, Anna Naquin, Margeaux Trahan, Lydia Friedman, Jena Thibeaux, Jenaye Zeringue, Lindsey McCain, Shelly Broussard and Dawn Alexander.

Named St. Martin Parish Teachers of the Year for 200102 were Cabrina A. Guidry of Cecilia Primary, Katherine C. Roy of Cecilia Jr. High and Nicole Usie of Breaux Bridge High.
