100 Years Ago October 1, 1926
Drilling was started this week by the Ohio Oil Company. This is the third well being put down in Section 28. This location was selected, it was reported, after photographs had been taken to locate the edge of the salt dome, and all are in great hope that this well will tap the oil pool and bring in a big gusher.
We are informed the Gulf Crushing Co., of Morgan City, gave free of cost, the shells used to build the walk from the Evangeline grave to the cement walk in front of the Catholic church.
The grading of the Keystone road is about completed and the laying of the gravel, which has already commenced, will be quick work, but the contractors are slow commencing work on the canal bridge.
The church fair given at Parks last Sunday was a success, and a good sum of money was raised, which will be used for the finish of the inside of the nice little church.
The weather was so cold Sunday morning last, to make heavier clothes comfortable. This will prove ideal weather for hay making, and the farmers are taking advantage of it, and are all busy. With a short corn crop, they will need all the forage they can make.
The fence erected around the grave of Evangeline under the trees and Spanish daggers, back of the Catholic church, and a shell walk built from this enclosure to the cement walk in front of the church was completed. In this inclosure are several other tombstones, with their inscriptions dated 1763. The records of the church show the landing of the Acadians here.
Last week the farmers of the lower part of St. Martin parish completed the organization of a Farmers Co-operative Association, which was legally formed and adopted a Charter, and now on, the farmers will work together, and if this is adhered to, success is bound to be the result.
50 Years Ago September 29, 1976
A fish count of Henderson Lake by the Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission showed that the game fish population of the lake was low, with only 15 pounds of game fish per acre compared to 54 pounds per acre in 1967-70 tests.

Art Club officers at BBSH were Becky Broussard, president; Sid Dupuy, vice president; and Pat Usie, secretarytreasurer.
40 Years Ago October 1, 1986
At a special meeting called by Mayor Earl “Mac” Willis, the St. Martinville City Council unanimously adopted a bingo ordinance whichclosely followed state provisions governing that type of activity.
Students in the auto body repair course at Evangeline Vocational-Technical School in St. Martinville began work on the restoration of a 1955 Ford Firetruck originally purchased by the Evangeline Volunteer Fire Department and affectionately known as “Sweet Prejean”.

St. Martinville was the last of vve parish municipalities to sign an intergovernmental agreement to jointly maintain the proposed 1,600 squarefoot, $120,000 parish animal shelter. The contract stated that St. Martinville would contribute about $15,000 per year to maintain the facility.
Jensie Darby of Breaux Bridge was crowned Homecoming Queen at Teurlings Catholic High during halftime ceremonies. Selected as 1st maid was Lauren Delahoussaye and 2nd maid Lacie Forester.
