September 18, 1926

Tuesday a wind and rainstorm passed in the Catahoula section. The wind was strong and moved the house on the farm formerly belonging to Alcide Rodrige, now occupied by Amedee Courville, from its foundation.

The heavy wind of Tuesday blew down four derricks in the Anse-la-Butte oil field, two of them on Mr. R. Martin’s land.

Names of Teachers for the 1926-27 Season. At a meeting of the school board held July 31, the following teachers were appointed: St. Martinville High School: W. B. Nash, Principal, May Lynn Amiss, Luke Richard, Gabrielle Thomas, Margaret Firnberg. Nannie Little, Louis Delaureal, Eunice Benoit, Elise Soulier. Enrollment at St. Martin public schools dropped for the second straight year, falling to 9,244 pupils. Enrollment at parochial and private schools in the parish was up overall. The public school enrollment breakdown was as follows: Breaux Bridge Primary 670, Breaux Bridge Elementary - 690, Breaux Bridge Jr. High-874, Breaux Bridge Sr. High - 716. Cecilia Primary - 682, Teche Elementary - 575, Cecilia Jr. High - 593, Cecilia Sr. High -473. Parks Primary - 217, Parks Elementary -192. Catahoula Elementary - 307, Stephensville Elementary - 356. St. Martinville Primary - 871, St. Martinville Elementary - 635, St. Martinville Jr. High - 750, St. Martinville Sr. High - 731.

Miss Roylynn Marie Jones was selected Miss Charm by the Charmette Social and Civic Club of St. Martinville. First maid was Lisa Kately; 2nd maid Riva Renee Potier; and 3rd maid Sandra Batiste.

September 18, 1986

Salvage crews began pulling up the old, Southern Pacific rails along the abandoned line between St. Martinville and Breaux Bridge.

Jimmy LeBlanc was named “Fireman of the Year” for the Breaux Bridge Volunteer Fire Department.

Winners in the plain box category of the annual Chariot parade were Lauren Thomas, 1st; Helen Hobert and Christopher Thomas, 2nd (tie); and Jordan Guidry, 3rd.

Their New York city bus tour was an hour late, tardiness that may have saved their lives. St. Martinvville’s Janice Decou was at “ground zero” or near it when terrorist slammed two planes into the World Trade Center on Tuesday, Sept. 11.

The 2001-02 cane grinding season began a day-late to allow growers an extra day of planting, delayed because of heavy rains two weeks earlier.
