Hear me shout!!!!! The Hummingbirds are back! My friend Mr. Huet reports the same thing at his house. Although I did not have any luck once before, I filled a second feeding container and hung it off my back roof.
Mindful of the knowledge that hummers are pretty territorial, I hung the second feeder quite a distance from the first. I have yet to see any little birds at the new feeder but one or more have been visiting the original one. It’s such a joy to see the little guys. I will have to get out my books to ID this bird since it’s mostly gray in color and I have not seen the ruby throated one yet.
Almost on cue, it rained pretty hard about 7 p.m. on Monday night, Aug. 23, for a while then the sun came back out. It is a bit cooler, however, and that is so nice. The rains lately have been quite ugly, quite sporadic but short lived.
My deck chairs get blown over, my flag wrapped in a knot on the pole. The other night a short storm made the power go on and off several times, never for long and I became aware that my house was getting really warm. A power surge or something knocked my mini-split units off and I didn’t realize it at first. These things are computer sensitive so I had to go onto the porch, take the breaker out and then put it back in. Just takes a few minutes but it’s sort of like the units have to figure out what happened and then get back to business.
Yoga for Seniors is still taking place at the Belle River Community Center on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 5:40 p.m. We start now with a short Tai Chi program so it’s about an hour total.
The man who cleans the building and takes care of the yard at both parks cleaned the carpets from the Belle River bathrooms last week and hung them over a nearby bench to dry while he went to the other park. When he got back the carpets were gone. The thieves were on camera the whole time so maybe somebody has ID’d them by now. The carpets weren’t huge but it is expensive to buy commercial ones like that.
The Little Free Library box at the Belle River Community Center is well used. I stop frequently and add books or just straighten things up a bit. Every now and then I take a book home, read it and take it back. Actually, I’ve found two Louis L’Amour books in the box and have really enjoyed reading them both. I surprised myself by how much I liked them. The descriptions of land and hills, et al is really great. I’ve never been a L’Amour fan before but now I see what I’ve been missing. I like westerns but had always avoided L’Amour thinking they were just too ‘corny.’ I was pleasantly surprised.
Food for Seniors tomorrow and I’m a bit anxious. Second Harvest has been calling all the local recipients and checking on their addresses and phone numbers I guess. Some of the people have called me asking what was going on. All my recipients and I have become pretty good friends. Not really close but I know who has had surgery, who didn’t. It must have been a job to call every recipient. I have less than 100 but I know some of the communities have 5-600 hundred. I guess I’ll find out if all’s well on Thursday. It would be nice if Second Harvest gave out fresh food but I’m not complaining.
By the way, I’m hearing that catching small sharks is a pretty common occurrence in the spillway these days. I’d thought a few reports were mistaken, but they seem to be true. Interesting!!!!
