Millions of dogs enter shelters and rescues in the United States each year. According to the ASPCATM, 2.8 million dogs entered shelters and rescues in 2025. While the ASPCATM reports euthanasia rates for shelter dogs decreased by 7 percent between 2024 and 2025, 320,000 dogs were still euthanized in 2025. Dogs, and large dogs in particular, also are spending more time in shelters than they were as recently as five years ago. The extended time in shelters has led to issues concerning shelter capacity, as many facilities have limited space for new animals. Prospective dog owners are urged to consider adoption when looking for a dog, as adoption can help prevent euthanization and alleviate space issues at local shelters. Adoption also tends to be less expensive than purchasing a dog directly from a breeder.
