100 Years Ago August 28, 1926
Mr. H. D. Bordelow, state sales manager of the Kenton Baking Powder Company, was in St. Martinvillefor a few days considering the advisability of advertising Snow King Baking Powder here.
The rice farmers are now all busy harvesting the rice crop, which is a fair one this season, but the price is a little lower than last year.
Spanish Lake, on the outskirts of New Iberia, is to be taken over by the state as a game and fresh water game fish preserve.
Mr. Fred Fournet last week successfully passed the examination before the State Board of Pharmacy, and was given his diploma as a druggist.
The storm started here Wednesday morning with a slow falling rain and a strong wind blowing from the north east, and continued all day in the same direction, but about ten o’clock at night the wind turn to the south west with increas led velocity. The damage in town Thursday was not large, some trees were broken and fences were blown down. It is feared, however, that the damage to the cotton and rice crops will be very large, and also the pecan crop, as the trees are ripped of all small branches.

Elected as officers of the parish chapter of the USL Alumni Association were Mavis Finley, Breaux Bridge, president; Henri Bienvenu, St. Martinville, vice president; Sis LaPorte, Arnaudville, secretary; and Stan Gauthier, Breaux Bridge, treasurer.
Roylynn Marie Jones was selected Miss Charm of 1976. First maid was Lisa Kately; second maid was Riva Renee Potier; third maid was Sandra Batiste; and fourth maid was Cheryl Francis.
Mercy High Honor Society officers were Phyllis Thibodeaux, president, Becky Resweber, vice president; Jill Bienvenu, secretary; Julie Bonin, treasurer; and Lynette Braud, reporter.
Elected as officers of the Catahoula 5th-6th 4-H Club were Keith Theriot, president; Cheryl Bijeaux, vice president; Darla Landry, secretary; Rae Louviere, reporter; and Kevin Courville and Renee Dugas, pledge leaders.

A huge crane was needed to lift a 110°, 13,600 pound light pole (one of four) installed at the St. Martinville High Football stadium. The big poles were the largest wood poles available in the U.S. and were shipped to St. Martinville from California.
Approximately 50 parish college students were having to find alternate transportation to USL following budget cutting action by the St. Martin Parish School Board.
The Breaux Bridge city administration was not aware of any suit allegedly filed against it by the religious sect, Hare Krishna. Media reports said that the city was being sued by the sect for unlawfully refusing church members to solicit donations at the Crawfish Festival in May.
Work began on a 17-room and library addition on the St. Martinville Primary campus.

A pay raise for teachers approved by the Louisiana legislature helped boost the salary of a beginning teacher with a bachelor’s degree in St. Martin Parish to $25,109.
Louisiana Sugar Cane Coop Manager Jackie Theriot predicted that parish farmers would beat the previous year’s record of 985,108 tons of sugarcane ground, as the 2001-2002 harvest season was set to start in early September.
