Finally, one tiny hummingbird was visiting my feeder but it didn’t stay long and hasn’t been back that I’ve noticed. This one was really little and mostly grey in color. Maybe it was a baby? Nice to know the little guys are still around. Or back!
Almost every day the sky darkens, thunder rumbles but not a drop of rain. This is most every afternoon. But by then the temperature has risen to a level keeping me off the levee. It will be nice when I can walk again along the seawall.
The Belle River boat landing is not busy these days. I don’t see/ hear anyone talking of catching sport fish.
I did see two guys pulling in a gigantic log - looked like a sinker— and getting it onto a trailer they had. It was quite an ordeal. I know these guys and know that one of them has a portable sawmill. When I look at one of these huge logs I think it doesn’t look like much, but I guess it produces a lot of valuable cypress. Must have been a chore just finding it and getting it to the landing!!!
I have a granddaughter whose husband’s family lives in Cali, Colombia and they just had their city home demolished in the earthquake. From what I’m told, the family is ok although there was some question about a relative who lived away from the city and nobody had heard from him yet. The pictures on TV and computer are really awful. I understand this is the first earthquake in that area in over 10 years. Colombia is on the edge of what’s called The Ring of Fire where tectonic plates meet or sometimes don’t meet.
I experienced a small quake once many years ago in San Diego. The pictures on the wall were swinging a little but there wasn’t much else. It was odd but not scary. Thinking about the weather makes me wonder if something major has happened climate wise. Knock on wood, but we are not getting bad storms here, but my northern family has had tornadoes, wind storms, high temperatures and extra cold winters.
I think this hot weather has scrambled my brain. My latest blood work showed a slight abnormality in vitamin D, something I’m not getting much of these days since I don’t go outside often, although I did manage to stay out long enough to repot big ferns and an African Violet. I could tell how long it had been since I’d done any “gardening” when I had to knock off pounds of mud dauber nests from the pots I used.
I’m not aware of any holiday this past weekend but on the way to visit a friend in upper Pierre Part today, I first had to wait in a long line to get across the Belle River bridge. Then I had to wait again to pass over the Pierre Part bay bridge and believe it or not, had to do everything in reverse coming home. As far as I could see, the river traffic consisted of moderately small boats but with sun canopies which wouldn’t pass under the bridges. Fortunately, I had some junk mail in the car which I read while sitting in line, mail which I probably threw away when I got home, but it was something to do.
I will mention it again, but on Oct. 31 the Barataria Terrebonne National Estuary Program is having a one day paddle starting, and ending at the Veterans Park water trails in upper Pierre Part. I don’t have many details yet, but if you’re interested, in paddling I’ll provide more information soon. It should be a fun day. I think I heard something about people dressing up because it’s on Halloween day. Not sure about that yet.
