A homecoming rooted in faith marks Mallalieu United Methodist Church’s next chapter, as Rev. Sonya Johnson Pierre returns to her hometown to lead as Local Licensed Pastor.
Born in St. Martinville and raised in Mallalieu UMC, Rev. Pierre’s appointment brings a full-circle moment for her and the congregation. Her return has energized both church and community, beginning with Vacation Bible School this summer to welcome local families into a week of faith, learning, and fellowship.
Looking ahead, the Seeds of Hope Initiative will launch this fall as a year-round program for youth and families in the St. Martinville area. The goal is to serve 60 to 80 children and their families, providing a safe environment where young people can deepen their faith, form mentoring relationships, and gain confidence through education, service, and intergenerational activities. Families will participate in outreach events and community gatherings that strengthen connections within and beyond the church.
“The goal is to plant seeds today that will grow into tomorrow’s leaders,” Rev. Pierre says. “Every child deserves to know they are loved by God, valued by their community, and capable of making a difference.”
The Seeds of Hope Initiative combines faith formation with practical support, mentorship, and community partnerships to foster resilience, leadership, and ongoing engagement. It reflects Mallalieu UMC’s commitment to investing in the next generation while honoring the church’s legacy of service to St. Martinville.
Community members are invited to support through prayer, volunteering, and participation in upcoming events. The church envisions an environment where every child can thrive spiritually, socially, and emotionally.
