After reading “Jean L’Ours et la fille du roi,” a Louisiana French folk tale about a hero who is half man, half bear, participants at the August 5 St. Martinville French Table competed in games based on the story. Winners included, standing from left to right: Collin Lee, meilleur tireur (Best Shot); Gunther Meixner, meilleur coureur (Best Runner); Danny Guidry, meilleur crieur (Best Yeller); Sidney Bellard, meilleur tireur (Best Shot); Ben Deshotels, meilleur attendeur (Best Hearer); André St. Romain, meilleur chien (Best Dog). Additional winners included Sue Thomas, meilleur crieur (Best Yeller); Henrietta Hilbun, meilleur tireur (Best Shot); and Craig Frederick, meilleur tireur (Best Shot). The table meets every Wednesday from 10 to 11 a.m. at Longfellow-Evangeline State Historic Site and welcomes all speakers of Cajun, Creole and international French, beginners to native speakers. Admission is free.
