The Acadian Memorial Foundation invites all to take part in the Worldwide Day of Remembrance on Tuesday, July 28.
“A Day of Commemoration of the Great Upheaval” was proclaimed in 2003 by Queen Elizabeth II.
This is the official day for the world to remember the suffering of the Acadian people as a result of Le Grand Dérangement between 1755 and 1763. Due to a British order of deportation, over half of the Acadian population were forced to leave their homes in northeast Canada, and about half of the population died as a result.
There will be a French Mass of Remembrance at 5:00 p.m. at St. Martin de Tours Catholic Church, 133 South Main St., St. Martinville.
Following the Mass, the Acadian Memorial will join the Acadian Museum of Erath to recognize and honor music educator Madeline DeHart as a Acadian Living Legend. DeHart is known for her role in bringing traditional Louisiana French music to Vermilion Parish students.
All are invited to the ceremony and reception from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at the Acadian Memorial, 121 South New Market St., St. Martinville.
