100 Years Ago July 10, 1926

This week the Evangeline Pepper Products began to buy figs and pack the products for the market. The plant will be very busy the next weeks as the Louisiana Celeste figs have to be picked and cook without much delay once they are ripe.

Mr. E. A. Davis, a superintendent for the Bowie Oil Company, who has started to drill a well this week on the Begnaud track at the Anse-la-Butte oil field.

Mr. Milton Bonin will be ordained to the Holy Priesthood at the Catholic church here by the Right Rev Jules B. Jeanmard, Bishop of Lafayette.

For those not well acquainted with the fire alarm of this town let them note that the fire alarm are as follows: one blow, Pinaudville; two blows, Post office to Gilbert Durand; three blows, Post office to Court house; four blows, Faubourg.

We have so far heard no report of the appearance of the cotton hopper or Mexican flea in this part of the state.

Governor Fuqua signed House bill 297 introduced by Dudley LeBlane providing for an appropriation of $10,000 for the Evangeline Memorial Park and the monument to be erected by the Longfellow Evangeline Memorial Association at St.Martinville to commemorate the settlement of the Acadians in Louisiana.

50 Years Ago July 7, 1976

Installed as officers of the. St. Martinville Lion’s Club were Alfred Potier, president; Henry Signorelli, 1st vice president; Larry Degeyter, 2nd vice president; Ernest Dore, 3rd vice president; Adley Bernard, secretary: Tony Champagne, treasurer; Albert Thomas, Lion tamer; and Earl Guidry, tail twister.

Officers of the Breaux Bridge Youth League were Gerald Cormier, president; Ricky Blanchard, vice president: Elaine Buckner, secretary; and Addie Boyer, treasurer.

Miss Inez Gauthier was elected president of the St. Martinville Lioness Club. Elected to serve with her were Mrs. Lou Potier, vice president; Mrs. Sydney Durand, secretary; and Loretta LaComb, treasurer.

Kelly LeBlanc of Cecilia was selected to attend the American Institute of Cooperation held at Virginia Polytechnic Institute in Blacksburg, Virginia.

40 Years Ago July 8, 1986

A new parish ordinance adopted by the police jury placed extensive restrictions on the conduct of bingo games and pull tab activities.

Anne Marie Dupre of Cecilia was selected to receive a gift membership in the American Association of University Women.

The Chez Sidney Seafood Bandits captured first place honors at the State Youth Sr. Softball League Championship Tournament.

Newly elected officers of the Breaux Bridge Crawfish Festival Association were Allen Thibodeaux, president; Kirk John Barilleaux, vice president; Kathy Trosclair, secretary; and Emmeline Green, second vice president.

GiGi Blanchard of Breaux Bridge, was chosen as a member of the United States trampoline team to compete in the World Championships in Paris, France.

25 Years Ago July 10, 2001

Members of the America Legion and VFW posts in St. Martinville conducted special flag raising ceremonies at the McDonald’s restaurant on the Fourth of July. The ceremony was the only public Independence Day observance in the city of St. Martinville.

Martin Parish High School ball standouts invited to play with the West squad in the 2001 and High School Coaches All-Star Football game included Corey Potier and Melvin Goodie of Breaux Bridge; and Jacob Guidry of St. Martinville.

Jessie Elizabeth Breaux of Breaux Bridge was crowned 2011 Louisiana Farm Bureau Queen at the annual convention held in New Orleans.
