100 Years Ago June 19, 1926

In the apportionment made by the State department for the schools of the parishes, this week, St. Martin Parish received $11,869.22.

Mrs. A. A. Anding, president of the Evangeline - Longfellow National Memorial Association, returned from Baton Rouge, announcing that the park bill was reported favorable and that she had heard from Congressman Whit P. Martin that the $100,000 appropriation bill for the Louisiana State Park was favorable.

The election for town officers for the village of Parks took place Tuesday, there was no opposition to the present council who is composed of T. B. Melancon, Mayor, Ben Potier, Laizaire Dugas, and Henry Soulier. For Chief of Police Dan Castille the present Chief was defeated by Emile Bernis by 4 votes.

The state land office has leased the oil, gas and mineral rights on three bottoms in the state. For the rights on a portion of Lake Tass, in Iberia and St. Martin parishes, J. B. Ferguson, with a bid of $1200 cash bonus and $600 rental annually, was the successful bidder.

Mr. Edmond Bulliard bought a Willys Knight Sedan this week. It is a beautiful car.

50 Years Ago June 16, 1976

The St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Breaux Bridge was heavily damaged by fire. Damages to the church building were estimated at $100,000.

Preliminary reports from a recent city-wide population count indicated that St. Martinville had gained 467 residents during the last six years. The population of the city was 7,620, while the 1976 U.S. Census listed the population at 7,153. The new census figures were expected to raise the city’s tobacco tax revenues by roughly $4,600 per year.

St. Martin Parish Cowbelles presented their “Father of the Year” award to Robert Harrington of Breaux Bridge.

Dezra Stevens was chosen Miss Teen Arnaudville. Martha Guidry was selected Miss Tot Arnaudville, and Yvonne Frederick was named Miss Jr. Teen Arnaudville.

40 Years Ago June 18, 1986

Newly elected members of the St. Martinville Sr. High cheerleading squad were Lynette Hebert, Cassandra Leon, Jane Dunham, Claire Bienvenu, Dana Broussard, Patricia Hebert, Tiffanie Levert, Dodie Savoy and Katherine Trail.

The St. Martinville City Council gave the St. Martinville Chamber of Commerce its approval to use La Maison Duchamp as its new office headquarters.

Six St. Martin Parish 4-H’ers participated in the State 4-H Leadership Conference in Baton Rouge. They included Jamie Smith, Derek Kaupp, Kayla Huval and Mike Cazayoux of Breaux Bridge High; Claire Bienvenu of Mercy High; and Tom McHugh of St. Martinville High.

25 Years Ago June 20, 2001

City, parish and state officials gathered to mark the start of the Rees Street/La. 328 improvement project in Breaux Bridge. The $5.9 million state project will widen the busy roadway from two lanes to five along a 1.5 mile stretch from I-10 to Refinery Road.

The July/August issue of Travel Holiday magazine hit the newsstands listing St. Martinville as one of the “Ten Best Small Towns in America” in its featured cover story.

Louisiana junior outfielder Alex Fuselier of St. Martinville was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates on day two of the 2011 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft last week. Fuselier, a three-year letter winner for the Ragin’ Cajuns and the team’s 2011 lead-off hitter, was taken in the 21st round by the Pirates with the 632nd overall pick.
