100 Years Ago June 12, 1926

The Five Hundred Club was entertained by Miss Estelle Bulliard. A game of cards was played, and the prizes won as follows: 1st prize, Miss Inez Bienvenu; 2nd prize, Miss Estelle Bulliard, and consolation, Miss Agnes Barras. A fine lunch was served to the members.

Mrs. J. L. Beyt entertained the Bridge Club Tuesday afternoon, after a card game refreshments were served.

The Bienvenu Theatre received and installed a new and one of the most approved of moving picture machines. This new machine will insure better pictures and more regularity in the production of pictures.

A black bear weighing about 300 pounds was killed near Cade on Duprelon Lopez’s plantation. The bear was first seen in a patch of corn, and when pursued, took refuge in a thicket, in a low marshy spot, he was followed by the dogs, who located his hiding place and he was shot.

A resolution asking for $100,000 as federal aid in establishing the Longfellow-Evangeline Park in St. Martin Parish, was introduced by Representative Martin of the Third Louisiana District.

50 Years Ago June 9, 1976

Steve Guilbeau was appointed St. Martin Parish county agent.

Ellen Champagne and George Huval Jr. of Parks Elementary were presented awards for achieving the highest scholastic averages in their first six years of school.

Jeanette Porter was crowned Miss Black St.Martinville. First runner up was Mary Elizabeth James and Carlette Mouton was named second maid.

Norris Senegal of St. Martinville attended the New Orleans Jazz Rookie Camp at the request of Jazz Coach Bill Bertha.

Parish 4-H’ers whose dogs placed first at the 4-H sponsored Dog Show were Jan Begnaud, Parks; Jackie Durand and Patty Ledoux, both of Mercy High; and John Breaux and Sammy Castille, both of Breaux Bridge Elementary.

Mrs. Curtis Castille was selected 1976 Girl of the Year by the Zeta Kappa Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi.

Members of the St. Martin Parish Bicentennial Commission inspected one of seven tourism signs being constructed for the parish. The large signs will be placed at strategic locations throughout the parish to direct visitors to historic attractions in the area.

40 Years Ago June 11, 1986

Installed as officers of the Zeta Kappa Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi in Breaux Bridge were Priscilla Breaux, president; Bonnie Landry, vice president; Mickie Castille, corresponding secretary; Louella Blanchard, recording secretary; Betty Frederick, extension officer; and Sylvia Green, treasurer.

Officers of the Breaux Bridge Crustacea Association were Felix Menard, president; Mrs. Lorine Ozen, vice president; Mrs. Mildred Lewis, secretary; and Mrs. Celia Jean Lewis, treasurer.

Dezra Stevens of Arnaudville was selected Miss Teen Arnaudville.

Ten Trinity Primary students received the President’s Award for academic excellence for the 1985-86 school year. The award was given to students who consistently excel in all academic areas and those who show consistent effort. They included Kimberly Narcisse, Carla Trahan, Renee Gauthier, Tance Fremin, Alyson Eastin, Suzanne Bienvenu, Brian Fontenot, Emily Dugas, Floydell Benjamin and Marcus Lewis.

25 Years Ago June 13, 2001

A weak tropical storm named Allison sent seemingly ceaseless rains to south Louisiana and a good portion of Acadiana. Cypress Island, Lake Martin, Cade and phensville appeared to have been hit hardest by the five day deluge that dropped 18 to 26 inches of rain.

Yvette Greig was named St. Martinville Sr. High Mama Tiger of the Year. She was presented with a plaque and gift certificate.

Inductees into the Breaux Bridge Military Hall of Fame included Lt. Col. Dewey L. Coles, Col. Roland Guidry, Col. Shirly Ray Trumps, and SFC Jimmie Bergeron.
