Opelousas man arrested after pursuit over multiple parishes that ended in crash

Deputies with the St. Martin Parish Sheriff’s Office were conducting a roadside safety checkpoint in the 400 block of West Mills Avenue in Breaux Bridge on May 28 when they saw a driver turn around to avoid the checkpoint at approximately 11:39 a.m.

After seeing the driver speed off, a deputy attempted to conduct a traffic stop, which led to a pursuit.

The driver, later identified as 34-yearold Demarion Savoy, of Opelousas, lost control of his vehicle in the 4100 block of I-49 Frontage Road in Opelousas, causing the vehicle to overturn into a ditch.

Deputies received assistance from Louisiana State Police and the St.

Pursuit

Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office in apprehending Savoy.

His passengers included one adult and two children. No one was injured.

Savoy was arrested on the following charges:

• La. R.S. 14:108.1 Aggravated Flight (1 count);

• La. R.S. 14:46 False Imprisonment (1 count)

• La. R.S. 14:93 Cruelty to Juveniles (2 counts);

• La. R.S. 14:95.1 Possession of a Firearm by a Person Convicted of Certain Felonies (2 counts);

• La. R.S. 32:415 Driving under Suspension (1 count);

• La. R.S. 32:1304 Expired MVI (1 count);

• La. R.S. 47:521 Display of Temporary Registration License Plates (1 count);

• La. R.S. 14:96 Aggravated Obstruction of a Highway of Commerce (1 count);

• and La. R.S. 32:861 Insurance Required on Vehicles (1 count).

Because the arrest occurred in St. Landry Parish, Savoy was booked into the St. Landry Parish Jail and is pending transfer to the St. Martin Parish Correctional Center.
