100 Years Ago May 29, 1926
The American Legion Stanley Barras Post had a well attended meeting Tuesday, to select delegates to attend the annual State Convention. The delegates selected were Judge Jas. D. Simon, L. J. Bonin and C.J. Edwards. After the meeting a nice lunch was served at the Rousseau Restaurant.
The most instructive pagent that ever was shown in the history of the State of Louisiana was staged by the little town of St. Martinville, when the high school of that little city came out to boost Louisiana. Miss Bernadette Beyt was queen of the pagent, and represented Louisiana. The following young ladies represented the said cities: Miss Genevieve Dessens, represented Shreveport; Miss Elise Mae Freeman, represented Baton Rouge; Miss Beatrice Tally, represented Alexandria; Miss Aurelia Dugas, represented Lake Charles; Miss Leona Gary, represented Lafayette; and Miss Mattie Livingston, represented New Orleans.
The oil activity is reviving around St. Martinville. Several leases have been made at $10 per acre in the neighborhood of the Granger place, where wells were put down several years ago. The Bank of St. Martinville has given a five year lease, with one eighth royalty on 141 arpents of land, on Keystone for $7,100.
A municipal election will take place at Parks on June 15th. There will no opposition to the present council which is composed as follows: Mayor T. B. Melancon, Councilmen, Ben Potier, Henry Sonnier and Laizaire Dugas.
Other oil companies are coming here and getting more leases, and the shooting of dynamite is heard all around St. Martinville almost every day of the week.
50 Years Ago May 26, 1976
Formal dedication ceremonies of the new 25 acre Breaux Bridge city park--Parc Hardy-took place.
The drivers’ license office in St. Martinville was one of 47 across the state scheduled to be closed as a result of economy measures in the Department of Public Safety.
Top athletes in the three age divisions of the St. Martinville Jr. Champ Track Meet were Keith Jacquet, peewee; Rowdy Thibodeaux, junior; and Sam Alexander, prep.
Thomas Huval of Breaux Bridge was one of 21 finalists in the Catholic Youth Leadership Awards presented by the Louisiana State Council, Knights of Columbus.
Cathy Bienvenu and Kelly Willis were chosen Miss and Master St. Martin Academy. Miss Bienvenu’s maids were Liz Gary and Vicky Delcambre. Willis’ dukes were Joe Dautreuil and Mark Smith.
40 Years Ago May 28, 1986
Angel Thevenet of Breaux Bridge was the valedictorian at Teurlings Catholic High School.
Leonard Eisenstein, St. Martinville Sr. High 4-H leader, was elected as the first president of the state’s Rock Eagle Alumni Association.
Breaux Bridge High School basketball standout Clint Aubrey signed an athletic scholarship to attend Panola Jr. College in Carthage, Texas.
Breaux Bridge High Lady Tiger softball players named to the 7-AAA All-District team were Michelle Champagne, Monica Angellette and Jayne Guidry.
St. Joseph Catholic Church (Cecilia) Youth Group officers included Karice Angelle, president; Missy Jarreau, vice president; Christine Thomassee, secretary-reporter; Tracie Guilbeau, treasurer; and Chad Hardy, publicity chairman.
25 Years Ago May 30, 2001
The parish’s top-ranked academic students in St. Martin’s three public high schools this year included eight with perfect 4.0 averages and five salutatorians. Graduating with top honors were valedictorians Janie Leger of Breaux Bridge High; Brent Angelle of Cecilia High; Tiffany Ann Charles, Joshua Buller, Cramin Wiltz Il, Hillary Comeaux and Phouthaly “Amy” Keovisay, all of St. Martinville High. Salutatorians were Lacy Berthelot of SMSH; Brooke Arnaud of CHS; and Tracie Belaire, Heather Zeringue and Joni Doucet, all of BBHS.
Jordan Guidry of St. Martinville was one of the five valedictorians in this year’s Catholic High School graduating class of 101 students last week.
Jamie Guilbeau of Cecilia was honored as the salutatorian of the 2001 graduating class at Westminster Christian Academy during the school’s recent commencement ceremony.
Recently elected officers of the Breaux Bridge Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4215 were installed by Lovelace DuBois (seated, left), 4th District commander, at the post’s May meeting. The new officers include (seated, continuing from left) Javis Robert, commander; J.H. Legrand, Sr. vice commander; and Emile Olivier, Jr. vice commander; Edmond Cormier, quartermaster; Vance Theriot, chaplain; Lin Berard, surgeon and adjutant; Jackie Segura, advocate; David Guidry, trustee; and Ferdie Guidry, officer of the day.
Piano students of Mickie Sibley participated in the Junior Louisiana Music Federated Club Festival in Grand Coteau, collecting 11 superior rating and one excellent. Participants included Jennifer Picard, Aimee Kidder, Lisa Menard, Gretchen Pearce, Greg Menard, Nicole. Picard, Kelli Picard, Stephanie Myers, Grant Schexnider, Beth Hinchee, Amy Stelly and Myra Stelly.
The St. Martin School Board appointed three new school principals to succeed veteran headmasters who are retiring. The new principals are Alvin Jones at Breaux Bridge Elementary, Georgie Blanchard at Catahoula and Charlene T. Leblanc at Cecilia Primary.
