Baja St. Martin

I guess the best thing I can say about May l9 is that it’s over. I was awakened about 4 a.m. by loud rain and occasional thunder. The rain really pelted on my tin roof but I managed to fall back asleep a little except I had set my alarm for 6 a.m. and then I worried I might oversleep.

Anyway, I didn’t and the rain slacked off about 7:30 a.m., just in time to drive to Stephensville Elementary School for their annual closing program. It is always a nice program, well run and not too long since there aren’t that many students.

I have to laugh a little (quietly) at the awards and certificates which were given out for all sorts of things but I think it is nice for probably every student to get some recognition. Best friend, best joke teller, happiest, most helpful, etc., not to mention all the academic accomplishments.

Classes are small so in a few cases every student in a class was honored for good behavior or perfect attendance or something. And there were a lot of million word Accelerated Readerss.

The graduating class of 8th graders was just four kids. Three girls and one boy. I’ll send a few pictures for the paper.

Oh, and I want to mention, that Stephensville Elementary has one of the best stocked Little Free Libraries I’ve ever seen in its parking lot. Between programs and rain I browsed the box and found a book I’ve brought home to read. I will personally stock the box when I can and hope others do during the summer.

As I write it is thundering out. And getting dark even though it’s only 6 p.m. My yard has standing puddles and I notice the river level is just about up to the top of my neighbor’s seawall. She has a small pond in her yard which is getting bigger and bigger. My Michigan sister said a bad storm passed through her area yesterday so maybe this is part of it. We had no wind, thank goodness.

Mr. Huet, I was not seeing any Hummingbirds at my feeder so I took it down, washed it thoroughly and refilled it. Now I’m still not seeing any hummers and they usually come during rain storms. What’s the problem? Maybe the Knockout Rose bushes are providing enough nectar?

I’ve noticed that magazines are very expensive these days meaning I don’t subscribe to a few that I once did. And I wasn’t reading them. But today I got two magazines in the mail that I did not order - both free issues. I know they’re just enticements but wouldn’t it be nice if a full subscription was also cheaper.

Between spending a day at SES for their closing program followed by a full day at Pierre Part Elementary for their closing program, I’m about worn out. Those metal chairs and gym bleachers get mighty hard after a few hours.

The man who mows my yard came before the rains but drove too close to the ditch, got stuck and had to use his truck to pull his big mower back onto the lawn. Then he went next door and the weed eater he was using threw a shell at a neighbor’s window, making a chip. Not a good day for him.

It is 4 p.m. on Thursday, May 21 and it has not rained once all day - yet. My Weather Bug app says it’s coming but the sun is shining right now. I think I will take the dog for a walk while I can. She’s been inside all week. I have more work to do but I’m sick of being inside.

Hope everyone enjoyed the long Memorial Day holiday!
