Free fishpond workshop set for May 19 in Breaux Bridge

The LSU Ag Center is sponsoring a Fishpond Workshop on Tuesday May 19 at 5:30 p.m. at Atlas Feed Mill, 816 Grant Ave., Breaux Bridge. The program is free and open to the public. All fishpond enthusiasts are invited to attend.

The event will feature, Dr. Greg Lutz, Aquaculture Specialist with the LSU AgCenter. Dr. Lutz joined the LSU AgCenter in 1991, and he has state-wide extension responsibilities for all commercial aquaculture as well as recreational and ornamental residential pond management. His presentation will cover stocking, aquatic vegetation, water quality, and best management practices. Participants are encouraged to bring questions, pictures and samples of water or aquatic weeds that are problematic in their operations.

Stuart Gauthier, County Agent with the LSU AgCenter in St. Martin Parish is helping to organize the event. Over his 32-year career with the AgCenter, he has worked with local pond owners.

Recreational fishponds are a common site in St. Martin Parish. Often, they are created for the dual purpose of elevating land to build a house and to create an opportunity for recreational fishing in the backyard. It is not uncommon for pond owners to struggle with managing aquatic weeds and water quality.

If you would like to attend the program, pre-register by calling County Agent, Stuart Gauthier at the St. Martin Parish LSU Extension Office located at 114 Courthouse Street in Breaux Bridge at 337-332-2181 or emailing sgauthier@agctr. lsu.edu. Pre-registration for the event is being encouraged to give organizers an estimate of participation levels that can be expected, but walk-ins for the event are also welcome.
