100 Years Ago May 8, 1926

Messrs. M.J.Voorhies, parish agent, J.J. Burdin, A.C.Gauthier and Albert Bienvenu, joined in the Iberia Parish Irish potato tour. In this tour were about 40 persons, to see the several patches of Irish potatoes planted the first! year, for the outside market, and to demonstrate the superiority of the Montana and Nebraska certified seed, over ordinary, and also, the necessary use and of the required amount of commercial fertilizers.

The sale of the bonds, of the St. Landry-St. Martin Gravity Drainage District No. 1, for which bids were advertised to be sold Monday, were not sold for the reason there was only one bid submitted, which did not conform with the terms of the notice of sale. The sale will have to be readvertised.

The oil prospectors bave been shooting dynamite all around this town during the past few days, every shot is felt here by the trembling of buildings and ratting of panes.

The Louisiana Electric Company has erected their poles from Cade to the limit of the town, and have strung their wires on the poles. They have not yet obtained any permit to enter the town.

50 Years Ago May 5, 1976

Tonya Theriot of Breaux Bridge was crowned St. Martin Parish Farm Bureau Queen. Monica LeBlanc, also of Breaux Bridge was named first maid; and Mary Melancon of St. Martinville was second runner-up.

The St. Martinville City Council decided not to renew the city’s liability insurance policy.

Gwen Laviolette of St. Martinville was the recipient of the Edwin Mouton Political Science Scholarship at USL.

Terry Martin of the Cecilia Squires was elected president of the Louisiana Squires.

St. Martinville Sr. High Lady Tiger softball players earning All-District honors in District 5-AAAA were Rachel Resweber and Sandra Jean-Batiste.

40 Years Ago May 7, 1986

Near-perfect weather, plenty of food and lively music and refreshments drew a huge crowd of visitors to Breaux Bridge for the annual Crawfish Festival. Attendance at Parc Hardy hit 24,160, a 10% increase over last year’s festival.

New officers of the St. Martinville Jaycees elected at the annual installation banquet included Jody Broussard, president; Brad Sonnier, treasurer; Jessica Broussard, MDVP; Corey Hulin, IDVP; Tom McHugh, EGVP; , Nicole Wiltz, secretary; and Duppy Duplantis, CDVP.

St. Martinville Mayor Earl “Mac” Willis cut the ribbon marking the formal dedication of St. Martinville’s new city hall. “Our Lady Queen of the Universe” was the theme of the 1986 May Day devotion staged parishioners of St. Martin de Tours Church in honor of the Blessed Mother. Portraying Mary was Renee Bonin.

25 Years Ago May 9, 2001

Cramin Wiltz and Mary Champeaux, students at St. Martinville Sr. High School, were among 79 Louisiana students chosen to attend the Louisiana Youth Summit To Prevent Underage Drinking, hosted by the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission.

Officers of the Parks American Legion Auxiliary included Marion Roy, president; Sadia Lasseigne, 1st vice president; Ria Poirier, 2nd vice president; Janet Lasseigne, secretary/ treasurer; Roxanne Roy, chaplain; Martha Theriot and Jean Lasseigne, color bearers; and Joni Doucet, sergeant-at-arms.

Members of the Mystical Krewe of Évangéline selected the following officers: Nancy Romero, president; Gisele Bulliard, vice president; Ginger Gauthier, secretary; and Keely Guirard, treasurer; and Heidi LeBlanc, captain of the ball.

Jalyne Cole was crowned the Afro-American Association’s Jr. Miss Crawfish Queen during the 2nd annual pageant First runner-up was Jansee Jones, while Bhrea Jones was second runner-up.
