100 Years Ago May 1, 1926

The True Friends, the oldest Mutual, Benevolent Association celebrated their 50th anniversary. In the morning they attended Mass at the Catholic Church, after which the members returned to their hall, where they elected the officers for the coming year who are: Alexandre Aubry, President; Robert Mollis, Vice President; George Mercier, Treasurer; and Willie Crouchet, Secretary. This association was organized by the late Jeff Vavasseur, who was its President as long as he lived.

Last week we reported that the Committee of the Presbytery repairs had, $4,000 which was more than necessary for the work, which was estimatted at $3,000, but this was the estimate of the first committee.

The St. Landry - St. Martin Gravity Drainage district No. have given notice that the Board will sell on May 3rd, $175,000 ad valorem tax coupon drainage bonds of $1000 denomination, and $200,000 of an acreage tax coupon drainage bonds of said district of $1000 each.

The heavy rains of the latter part of last week, were followed by several days of cold wind, which proved unfavorable for all growing crops.

A compilation of the parishes shows the population of St. Martin parish, estimated at 21,990 with deaths reported at 171 which should be 329 on an assumed basis of 15 deaths to 1000 persons; births reported at 426 should be 546 on the basis of 25 per thousand.

50 Years Ago April 28, 1976

Elected as officers of the Breaux Bridge Jaycees were Andy Bienvenu, president; Curtis Castille, 1st vice president; Don Levasseur, 2nd vice president; Buddy Pellerin, 3rd vice president; Wilson Thibodeaux, secretary; and Marcel “Butch” Hebert, treasurer.

Roland Robichaux of St. Martinville was the recipient of the Upjohn Achievement Award for outstanding community service at the Northeast Louisiana School of Pharmacy awards banquet.

Installed as officers of the Catahoula Jaycees were Dwight Courville, president; Herman Courville, 1st vice president; Edrick Courville, 2nd vice president; Randy Boudreaux, secretary; and Terry Bourque, treasurer.

Breaux Bridge Jaycee Jayne officers were Pat Hebert, president; Jeanie Bienvenu, vice president; Glenda Huval, secretary; Cathy Romero, treasurer; Peggy Guidroz, historian; and Susan Dumatrait, parliamentarian.

40 Years Ago April 30, 1986

Shelley Walters was crowned Crawfish Queen. First maid was Suzanne Alexander and second runner up was Dell Dupuis.

Dedication ceremonies were held at St. Martinville’s new city hall.

Malinda Broussard was crowned queen of the Crustacea Association’s celebration. First maid was Pamela Alexander and second maid was Paula Pappilion.

Candella Monique Ledet was crowned Jr. Crustacea Queen.

SMSH junior Sandra Jean-Batiste was the winner in the shot put and discus events at the District 5-AAA track meet.

Michelle Bulliard of St. Martinville was the bronze medal winner in the Class IV gymnastics state meet.

Sandra Calais of Cecilia won the coveted Best of Show award in the Acadiana Culinary, Classic IV.

25 Years Ago May 2, 2001

Fruit of the Loom officially announced that they would lay off all of the garment company’s approximately 1,300 workers by November and close down the sprawling Martin Mills plant just north of St. Martinville.

When the 2001-02 school session began, all St. Martin Parish school bus drivers were advised that they should have a cell phone for emergency use.
