Breaux Bridge and Cecilia High both advanced to the second round of the LHSAA Division II Non-Select baseball playoffs with series wins this past week to open the postseason.
No. 13 seeded Breaux Bridge swept two games from No. 20 West Ouachita while Cecilia, seeded 17th, upended No. 16 DeRidder in two of three games.
St. Martinville, the No. 22 seed in Non-Select Division III, lost a pair of games to District 5-4A rival Kaplan.
Breaux Bridge beat 9-5 on Friday and 11-0 on Saturday.
The Tigers (23-11) advanced to a regional best-of-three series at No. 4 Pearl River (187) starting Friday. The second game would be on Saturday, as would a third game if needed.
Pearl River had a first-round bye in the playoffs.
In Friday’s game, the Tigers rallied from a 4-2 deficit with three runs in the fourth inning, then added a run in the fifth and three in the sixth to win 9-5 over West Ouachita (15-20).
Caynon Ardoin had two hits including a double, with an RBI, and Kyson Rebert went 3-for-4 with an RBI and three runs to pace BBHS at the plate. Evan Theriot had a hit and an RBI and Benjamin Ellender and Chase Broussard also had hits.
Bryce Melancon pitched six innings for the win, allowing five unearned runs on three hits with five walks and three strikeouts. Caynon Ardoin allowed no hits with two walks and a strikeout in an inning of relief.
The Tigers committed seven errors on the night.
BBHS shut out the Chiefs 11-0 on Saturday to sweep the series. No details from the game were available at press time.
Breaux Bridge blasted Delcambre 21-8 on April 13 to close out the high school baseball regular season.
The BBHS team was paced by senior shortstop Sam Armentor, who went 4-for-4 and hit two doubles and two home runs, including a grand slam, and finished with seven RBIs.
Caynon Ardoin went 3-for-5 with two doubles and three RBIs. Benjamin Ellender had a double and an RBI, Bryce Melancon doubled; Chase Broussard had a hit and scored four times; Christian Camacho added two hits and three RBIs; Caymen Theriot was 1-for-1 with two RBIs; and Charlie Frederick had a hit and two runs.
Armentor also pitched three innings, allowing six runs, three earned, on six hits with two walks and three strikeouts. Melancon started and pitched two innings, giving up one hit and no runs with a walk and five strikeouts. Hayden Stelly pitched one inning and allowed two runs on three hits. Ardoin allowed no hits and struck out two in one inning.
Cecilia (18-16) lost to DeRidder 8-7 on Friday, then beat the Dragons (18-19) 9-8 and 11-9 on Saturday to advance.
Cecilia beat Southern Lab 10-0 on April 13 to end the regular season.
The Bulldogs will play No. 1 Brusly (29-5) on the road starting Friday at 6:30 p.m. Games 2 and 3 are scheduled Saturday at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m., if necessary.
The Panthers had a first-round playoff bye.
St. Martinville (14-15) dropped a pair of games to its District 5-3A rival Kaplan (16-16), losing 15-4 on Thursday and 9-3 on Friday.
The Tigers beat Westgate 3-2 on April 13 to end the regular season.

Softball
The Cecilia Lady Bulldogs beat Plaquemine 18-3 in four innings on Thursday to open the Division II Non-Select softball playoffs.
The Lady Bulldogs (13-14) traveled to face No. 4 North Vermilion (25-5) on Tuesday in a regional playoff game. The Lady Patriots had a first-round playoff bye.
The game was played after deadline for today’s newspaper.
The winner will play the winner of a regional playoff between No. 5 Iota (23-7) and No. 21 Albany (12-17) in the quarterfinals.
Cecilia lost a pair of games prior to the start of the playoffs, falling to St. Thomas More 13-3 on April 13 and to Southside 19-11 on April 14.
Breaux Bridge (5-14) and St. Martinville (113) did not earn playoff spots.
BBHS lost to Teurlings Catholic 14-1 on April 13 and St. Martinville lost to Westminster Christian 16-0 to finish the regular season.
