100 Years Ago April 10, 1926
We are requested by Sheriff Wade O. Martin to request those who have not yet paid their 1925 taxes, to come to the Sheriff’s office at once and pay same, he is getting ready to send notice, and will publish the delinquent list in a short time after, so those who want to avoid cost, should not delay any longer the payment of their taxes.
Another heavy rain accompanied by a heavy hail fell here Wednesday morning. It also rained Tuesday evening, which is proving discouraging to the farming interest. Nothing planted is coming out. The cane crop is not showing any, the corn is so bad that most of it must be replanted. The time to plant cotton is here, but due to bad weather only a small amount is planted.
Traffic lights have been installed by the city along the principal streets in Breaux Bridge and are proving quite a convenience to the traveling public.
Several people from Breaux Bridge attended a cock-fight in Broussard last Sunday.
50 Years Ago April 7, 1976
Sheila Renee Berard of St. Martinville was crowned Jr. Miss St. Martin. First Maid was Angela Romero of Parks, and second maid was Rachelle Devillier of Cecilia.
Newly elected officers of the St. Martinville Jaycees were Nathan Cormier, president; Jack Trail Jr., internal vice president; Keith Judice, external vice president; Adley Douet, secretary; and George “Butch” McHugh, treasurer.
St. Martinville Jaycee Jayne officers were Peggy Hardy, president; Peggy Cormier, vice president; Charlotte Durand, secretary; Faye Theriot, treasurer; Brenda Judice, reporter; and Marilyn deMahy, director.
Lelia Ann Galentine was crowned 1976 Queen Crustacea, and Sheila JeanLewis was named first maid.
Selected as Jr. Queen Crustacea was Barbara Lawrence. Lorenza Jolivette was chosen first maid.
40 Years Ago April 10, 1986
Brenda Ratliff Narcisse was the first woman winning a seat on the St. Martinville city council.
After serving St. Martinville for over 100 years, Our Lady of Mercy High School closed its doors.
For the second time in less than five months, voters in Breaux Bridge rejected two property tax millages which would have funded recreation improvements and general operations over the next 10 years.
Dr. Gerald Guidroz, secretary of the Office of State Parks, confirmed that the Longfellow Evangeline Commemorative area in St. Martinville would be closed two days a week.
The Breaux Bridge High Lady Tiger softball team finished regular season play with runnerup honors in District 7-AAA.
Officers of the St. Martinville Sr. High Beta Club were Derril Albert, president; Barry Blanchard, vice president; Kim Chambers, secretary; and Tami Bonin, treasurer.

An April 9 letter from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers indicated that the Corps was now prepared to “transfer ownership and maintenance of the Keystone Lock, property and facilities to St. Martin Parish.
Ashley Dauphine was crowned the 2001 Crawfish Queen. Chosen to serve as maids were Rebecca Dekle, 1st maid, and 2nd maid Ashley Ayo.
Kayli Champagne of St. Martinville was crowned queen during the 2001 Jr. Miss St. Martin test sponsored by Beta Sigma Phi. Named 1st alternate was Alana Landry and 2nd alternate Courtney LeBlanc.
