Baja St. Martin

I’m watching a hummingbird feeding at the hanging device just outside my window. I’m delighted to see the little guy/girl and mostly delighted to not see any ants. Thanks to Mr. Huet Hebert’s instructions I have placed a small cut on the wire just above the feeder, filled it with some water and I watched with rather morbid glee when the ants streamed down the wire as usual, fell into the cup of water and went no further. Now I do see a chameleon lurking on the window not far from the feeder but so far he/she hasn’t made the leap.

Last night my dog encountered what I think was a possum under my house. The dog wouldn’t quit barking, despite my protests but later I shone a light out and saw the dog apparently after a critter out in the yard. From past experience I know if it was a possum it would get into the bushes at the side of the yard where the dog can’t go or would play dead and the dog would lose interest.

This morning it is a little windy and overcast, rain is forecast and I look forward to a moderate storm. My daughter in Tennessee said a storm was expected there, my sister in Michigan said the same for her area. Perhaps we’re next.

I have worn prescription glasses for quite a few years now and recently was told my ‘specs’ had changed enough to warrant new glasses. I decided to get that but had the day/ night feature added. My eyes are very sensitive to bright lights, like sunshine and OTC sunglasses just didn’t work. I actually lost a bit of sleep before I got the glasses at the doctor’s office worrying about the different lenses—too dark, too light? But so far, they are fine.

The hummer is back or one just like it. So glad.

Since I do not drive after dark anymore except for very short familiar distances, I ride to out of town board meetings with friends. I enjoy their company but the daylight hours are getting to the point where most meetings are over while it’s still light out and I can drive myself. I learn a lot riding with these friends, though. They know everyone in town, who’s doing what, who’s sick, whose house just burned. I guess we’ll see what happens when they don’t drive anymore.

As long as I was in Morgan City for the glasses I splurged and went to Rouses where I bought a small orchid plant. I had three but one looked dead so now I have three again. This one had an instruction card saying one ice cube a week which I may do but my custom has been to place all of them in a pot of water, with a little fertilizer added, let them soak awhile, drain on a towel and that’s it for the week. On the same day, I change the water in my Beta fish tank.

Oh, Mr. Huet, there’s the hummer again. So glad I am keeping those ants away. This little guy must really be hungry.

I am embarrassed to admit I didn’t even know about the Artemis space craft lift off this past week. My granddaughter in Orlando texted me and said she and her husband rushed outside of their house and could see the lift off clearly. Three men and one woman for 10 days. So far I’ve not heard anything bad which is wonderful.

My dear friends in upstate New York sent me a link recently about a new mushroom that is becoming invasive. A bright, golden mushroom. These friends introduced me to oyster mushrooms many years ago. Apparently this golden one is not poisonous but is crowding out other mushrooms.

Keep safe.
