Breaux Bridge clinches District 5-4A baseball crown

The Breaux Bridge High School baseball team swept a pair of games with Cecilia this past week to clinch the District 5-4A baseball championship.

BBHS beat the Bulldogs 3-9 on March 31 in Breaux Bridge, then beat CHS 6-3 on Thursday to improve to 6-1 in district. Cecilia fell to 3-2 in league play.

The regular season ends Monday with playoff pairings announced Tuesday. First-round best-of-three playoff series start in Division II and Division III on April 15.

In the first matchup between Breaux Bridge and Cecilia, the Tigers scored single runs in the third, fifth and sixth innings and winning pitcher Bryce Melancon limited the Bulldogs to one hit over seven innings.

Melancon struck out seven and walked two batters.

Caynon Ardoin had a hit and an RBI and Sam Armentor, Kai Lalonde and Evan theriot also had hits for the Tigers.

Braylon Domingue had Cecilia’s hit.

Jiazan Chanthavongay took the loss, allowing four hits over six innings and walking three while striking out five.

Breaux Bridge lost a non-district game to Vermilion Catholic on Wednesday, 4-1.

Caynon Ardoin and Bryce Melancon had the Tigers’ only hits. Benjamin Ellender pitched two innings and took the loss, giving up three hits and three runs with two walks and two strikeouts. Christian Camacho pitched four innings and allowed one run on two hits and struck out four.

On Thursday, Breaux Bridge scored two runs in the sixth inning and three in the seventh to win. Each team had a run in the first and Cecilia went up 2-1 with a run in the fifth, then added a run in the bottom of the seventh.

Sam Armentor hit a solo homer for the Tigers and Benjamin Ellender hit a three-run bomb in the seventh for BBHS. No other game details were available.

Breaux Bridge improved to 19-9 overall and was 13th in the Louisiana High School Athletic Association’s unofficial Division II Non-Select power rankings posted on Monday.

Cecilia fell to 13-14 overall and was 18th in the Division II power rankings.

If the playoffs started today, Breaux Bridge would host the 20th seed, currently Plaquemine (11-17) in a best-of-three series.

Cecilia would travel to No. 15 Iowa (10-15) in a best-of-three opening series.

St. Martinville lost to Kaplan 14-1 in a District 5-3A game on March 31 then beat Highland Baptist 9-5 in a non-district home game on Thursday. A Wednesday game against Jeanerette was canceled.

The Tigers (11-12 overall) finished 1-3 in district. SMSH is 22nd in the Division III Non-Select power rankings and would travel to No. 11 Kaplan for the firstround series if the playoffs opened today.

Softball

The Cecilia High Lady Bulldogs lost a pair of non-district games but were 12th in the latest unofficial LHSAA Division II Non-Select power rankings posted on Monday.

If the playoffs were to begin today, the District 5-4A champions (11-11 overall, 4-0 district) would host No. 21 seed Franklinton (7-14) in the first round of the Division II Non-Select playoffs.

Playoff pairings will be announced on April 14. The first round games must be completed by April 18.

Breaux Bridge beat Opelousas 19-1 in a District 5-4A game on March 30 but lost to Livonia 18-11 on March 31 to fall to 1-3 in district. BBHS also lost to Lacassine 20-6 in nondistrict play to fall to 5-13 overall.

The Lady Tigers are 32nd in the Division II power rankings and would not earn a postseason spot if the playoffs started today.

St. Martinville lost to Westgate 24-14 on March 30 and to Northwest 22-5 on April 1 to fall to 1-12 overall. SMSH went 0-4 in District 5-3A.

The Lady Tigers are 39th in the Division II Non-Select power rankings.
