100 Years Ago March 18, 1926

The bridge over the Keystone canal is in a bad and dangerous condition, and has been in that condition for a long time, and instead of the police jury repairing this bridge, they simply posted a board which reads “Dangerous, Cross at your own Risk.”

Another rain accompanied by a cold north wind fell Thursday morning, which will again delay all field work, which is already backward. The farming interest at this time would need good, dry weather with plenty of hot sunshine.

Demonstration agent M. J. Voorhies accompanied by about fifty farmers from the fourth and fifth wards of this parish left early Friday morning, to meet the agents of the Demonstration Department at Baton Rouge, to visit several of the truck farmers near St. Francisville, where the crops are about ready for the northern markets Steps were take at a meeting in Baton Rouge to have a statewide tick eradication bill offered in the Legislature.

Father Peters announced last Sunday that the Communion for men only will take place on Palm Sunday. It is expected that more than six hundred men will take Communion on that day.

Mr. James Bienvenu will leave for New Orleans to join other Ford agents, and from New Orleans will leave on a special train for Detroit, Michigan, where a general convention of Ford agents will meet at the Ford big plant in Detroit.

50 Years Ago March 17, 1976

Leah Barron of Breaux Bridge was declared state winner of the American Legion Oratorical Contest held at Louisiana College in Pineville.

Renee Hebert was crowned Jr. Crawfish Queen.

Gwyn Fruge, student at Cecilia Senior High, was the grand prize winner in the junior division of the Region VI Science Fair held at USL.

Jack Davenport was named a member of the Democratic State Central Committee.

Chellie Chitty of Parks appeared on an episode of the Today Show, which featured the influence of the French language and culture in St. Martin Parish.

Keith Hebert of St. Martinville was elected commander of the USL chapter of Sigma Nu Fraternity.

Jacqueline Landry was crowned “Miss Newcomer”. Her maids were Barbara Neveu and Sharon Fontenette.

40 Years Ago March 19, 1986

Jude Theriot of Catahoula was the first place winner in the 7-8th grade division of the 5th annual Advertiser-Goudcheaux spelling bee.

Tyrone Jones of St. Martinville Sr. High was selected to the first team of the 198586 District 5-AAAA basketball squad. In District 7-AAA, Perry Stewart of Cecilia High and Clint Aubrey of Breaux Bridge Sr. High were first team selections. Receiving honorable mentions - were Lawrence Hypolite, Marvin Castex, Cori Wiltz and Richard Boyd, all of Breaux Bridge; and Carroll Boudreaux and Mickey Calais of Cecilia.

Connie C. Bourque of St. Martinville was one of 244 poets whose poetry was published in In Quiet Times, Vol. V.

25 Years Ago March 21, 2001

St. Martinville Mayor Eric Martin told about two dozen concerned citizens and state officials with the Atchafalaya Basin Plan, that after a three year search the city finally found “the perfect piece of property” for a recreational vehicle park. The area, composed of about six acres along Bayou Teche, primarily consisted of the J.B. Talley Construction Co. property.

Parishioners of St. Bernard Catholic Church gathered for the official dedication of the new Msgr. P.A. Borel Center. The new center was built on the site of the old church hall.
