– The St. Martin Parish School Board approved a proposal for an insurance policy renewal for its mandatory flood insurance for Stephensville Elementary School at its Finance Committee meeting and regular board meeting this past Wednesday, then approved a proposal from Brown & Brown for insurance renewal for the school system.

Consent agenda

The board approved a consent agenda that included revisions to its 504/ SBLC handbook, a guideline to the school system’s plan for students with physical or mental impairments.

The agenda also included approving a partnership with the Dollywood Foundation for implementation of Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library in St. Martin Parish. The partnership gives books free of charge to children from birth to age 5, through funding shared by Dolly Parton and local community partners.

Employee incentive

The board narrowly approved a one-time, $500 incentive for timesheet employees by a 5-4 vote.

Board members Wanda Vital and Edna Johnson proposed the pay and voted for it, along with board members Richard Potier, Marlin d’Augereau and Steve Fuselier. Russel Foti, Mike Clay, Frederic Stelly and Mark Hebert voted against the motion and Jimmy Durio was absent from the meeting.

Finance Committee

The Finance Committee approved, and the board later approved both the renewal of flood insurance for Stephensville Elementary and an insurance renewal proposal from Brown & Brown, explained at the meeting by Coy Duplantis.

Insurance

“The main driver of your insurance is the auto, and the losses that continue to occur on the auto side,” Duplantis said. “Mainly the accidents, lot damage to your vehicle, just thirdparty suits.”

The loss ratio went down, Duplantis said.

Property insurance was structured similar to the previous year’s rate, he said.

Equipment breakdown insurance, which supplements loss due to mechanical failure such as an air conditioner or a boiler.

Final proposal numbers will come in April, he said.

In Other Business

The school system’s IT department was honored as the Scripps Employee of the Month for its work in securing the district’s computers against a ransom attack that could have crippled the parish school system’s computer system.

Fifth grader Landon Fenroy of Teche Elementary was recognized as the Region 8 State Finalist in Student of the Year voting.

In executive committee, the board discussed hiring a desegregation consulting firm, Louisiana Institute for Focused Turnaround, then voted to hire the firm after returning from executive session.
