Three parish teams lose in 1st round of playoffs

The three St. Martin Parish boys’ basketball teams all lost their opening-round Louisiana High School Athletic Association playoff games this past weekend on the road.

St. Martinville was edged by Assumption 45-43 on Friday; Cecilia was edged by Sterlington 37-33; and Breaux Bridge lost to DeRidder 70-42.

St. Martinville, the No. 20 seed in the Division II Non-Select playoffs, led No. 13 Assumption 14-11 after one quarter but trailed 25-20 at halftime. The Tigers outscored AHS 16-9 in the third period to surge ahead 36-34 but the Mustangs held an 11-7 scoring advantage in the fourth quarter to pull out the win.

Kervin Fontenette led SMSH with 15 points and Kristian Batiste added 14. Batiste hit three 3-point baskets and Fontenette had two for the Tigers.

Assumption was paced by Zimage Johnson’s 11 points and Zaven Mickens’ 10. The Mustangs also hit five 3-pointers with Johnson and Zion Willoughby each hitting two.

St. Martinville finishes the season with a 1417 record. Assumption (23-9) moved on to face No. 4 Bossier (19-8) in the regional round.

Cecilia, seeded 22nd in Non-Select Division II, finished its season with a 13-14 record. Sterlington (24-7), the No. 11 seed, advanced to a second-round playoff at No. 6 DeRidder.

Breaux Bridge, seeded 27th in Non-Select Division II, finished its season with a 12-17 mark. The sixth-seeded Dragons (23-7) went on to host Sterlington in the second round.
