Wiltz appointed to serve on Henderson Town Council

— A 25-minute executive session was the highlight of the Henderson Town Council’s February meeting.

The closed session was called so city attorney Jerry Mallett could brief the council on developments in the town’s ongoing litigation with MPERS, the Municipal Police Employees’ Retirement System.

The meeting also marked the introduction of new councilwoman Chantelle Wiltz, to fill the unexpired term of the late Bill LeGrand, who passed away in January.

Wiltz, a lifelong resident of Henderson and current general manager of a local hotel, was appointed by Mayor Sherbin Collette. She will serve until the November election.

“I approached several people about the position, but many weren’t interested in getting involved in government,” Collette said. “Chantelle ran in the last election and received about eight percent of the vote. She’s always been active in the community, so I asked her to complete the term, and she readily agreed.”

Wiltz said she’s eager to take on the responsibility.

“I’m looking forward to the experience,” she said. “I’m excited about the opportunity and anxious to see what I can accomplish on the town council.”

When asked whether she plans to run in the November general election, Wiltz said she has not yet decided.

“I’m going to wait and see what happens before I make that decision,” she said.

Entergy’s new area representative, Dyrk Soileau, addressed the council briefly to introduce himself and announce that he would be assuming oversight of the utility’s operations in the area.

In other business, the council voted unanimously to increase court costs for convictions in Mayor’s Court.

Police Chief Troy Dupuis and Park Commissioner Marvin Serrette both reported no new business.

With no further matters to discuss, the council adjourned until March.
