100 Years Ago

February 20, 1926

The masquerade ball Mardi Gras night was a grand success, in attendance and enthusiasm. The ball was started at about 8:30 when the large number of early arrivals covered the floor of the spacious hall, and at nine o’clock when the Royal Court arrived the hall was cleared and the middle space given to the Royal Court who marched around the hall before taking their seats on the beautifully decorated stand. The King was Mr. Zerben Bienvenu, the Queen Miss Leona Martin. The Dukes and Duchesses were: Dr. P H. Fleming and Miss Leonie Bienvenu; Mr. L. J. Montegut and Miss Mabel Delahoussaye; Mr. Reuben Bienvenu and Miss Maizel Greig; and Mr. Lawrence J. Bonin and Miss Millie Knight. The new dance, the Charleston, was much in evidence, and admired by all.

Results of the Popularity Contest at St. Martin High School Session 1925-26 included: Most Studious Girl: 1. Agnes Boudreaux. 2. Aurelia Dugas. 3. Edith Theriot. Most Studious Boy: 1. Milton Barras, 2. Roger Bienvenu. 3. John Tally. Wittiest Girl: 1. Leona Martin. 2. Doreen Eastin and Christine Muszar. 3. Aline Bulliard, Maydell Durand and Rhena David. Wittiest Boy: 1. Tilden Bonin. 2. Ward Livingston. 3. Earl Bienvenu. Best Girl Athlete: 1. Maydell Durand. 2. Christine Muszar. 3. Edith Theriot and Nita Landry. Best Boy Athlete: 1. Marcel Bienvenu. 2. Abe Delahoussaye. 3. Tilden Bonin and Harold Cade.

Most Intelligent Girl: 1. Agnes Boudreaux. 2. Aurelia Dugas.

3. Velma Livingston. Most Intelligent Boy: 1. Milton Barras. 2. Doyle Spell. 3. Willis Ducrest.

Prettiest Girl: 1 Mattie Livingston. 2. Mary Belle Junca. 3. Pearl Eastin. Most Handsome Boy: 1. Dan Bulliard. 2. Harold Cade. 3. Tilden Bonin and Ange Melancon. Most Dependable Girl: 1. Nita Landry. 2. Leona Martin. 3. Mary Belle Junca.

Most Dependable Boy: 1. Tilden Bonin. 2. Doyle Spell. 3. Harold Cade.

The season for all kinds of trapping for fur animals, closed on February 15. This season was short and not very productive.

Mr. Jas. Bonin was named Scoutmaster, and from now on will have charge of the Boy Scouts.

50 Years Ago

February 18, 1976

Chosen to reign as king and queen of the St. Martinville Lioness Club’s Children’s Carnival was Kim Champagne and Lisa Potier.

Andrew Daspit was selected King Rotary XXX at the annual Mardi Gras Ball.

Officers of the South Louisiana Radio C.B. Club were Roy Bonvillian, Jr., president; Paul Vann, vice president; Celia Broussard, secretary; and Arlene Hulin, treasurer.

Holy Name Society officers of St. Bernard Church were Lauret Guidry, president; Cleven Boudreaux, vice president; and Chester J. Guidry, secretarytreasurer.

Initiated into the national honor society of Phi Kappa Phi was Dr. Aline Garrett of St. Martinville.

40 Years Ago

February 19, 1986

Employees with the State Commissioner of Elections Office spent two weeks entering over 24,000 names and addresses of St. Martin Parish’s registered voters into the statewide computer systems linking together all the parish Registrar of Voters offices.

James Devillier of Breaux Bridge High School won top honors with his champion Braham heifer and Louisiana-bred champion Brahman heifer. Devillier also won junior champion Guernsey and Louisiana-bred junior champion Guernsey honors at the District Livestock Show.

Marshall Savoie was reelected fire chief of the Coteau Holmes Volunteer Fire Department. Other officers were Gilbert Lancon, president; Johnny Melancon, vice president; Norris Byron, treasurer; Debbie Robert, secretary; Daniel LeBlanc, sergeant at arms; and Tessie Prados, public relations.

25 Years Ago February 21, 2001

Fruit of the Loom officials laid off 73 employees in the distribution portion of Martin Mills, a garment subsidiary of the underwear manufacturer.

Newly elected officers of the St. Martinville Chamber of Commerce included Guy Cormier, president; Lisa Hebert, vicepresident; Fay Maraist, secretary; Lena Fuselier, treasurer; and Charles Durand and Janet Douet, directors.
