Cecilia lone parish girls’ team to get basketball playoff bid

The Cecilia High School Lady Bulldogs were the only St. Martin Parish girls’ basketball team to qualify for the playoffs that are scheduled to start this week.

Cecilia (13-15) finished as the No. 25 seed and is slated to travel to No. 8 West Feliciana (20-6) in the first round.

Bi-district (first round) games must be played by Thursday.

The top 28 teams in the LHSAA power rankings earn playoff bids.

St. Martinville (5-16) finished at No. 35 and Breaux Bridge (5-24) at No. 39 in the power rankings.

Regional round games must be played by Feb. 23, with quarterfinal games played by Feb. 26.

The girls’ Marsh Madness state tournament is scheduled March 2-7 at the University Center at Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond.

Sterlington (24-4), LaGrange (26-4), North Vermilion (25-3), Wossman (17-6) and Iowa (23-5) are the top five seeds in the girls’ Division II Non-Select power rankings. Sterlington is a Class 3A team while the other four are in Class 4A.

Boys

All three St. Martin Parish boys’ basketball teams remain in the mix for postseason bids as the Louisiana High School Athletic Association regular season wraps up this weekend.

The LHSAA released its power rankings on Monday that determine which teams will earn playoff bids and where they will be seeded.

Cecilia (12-12) remained 21st with a 30.14 power ranking, St. Martinville (12-15) moved up one spot from 23rd to 22nd with a 29.58 power ranking. Breaux Bridge (12-9) dropped slightly from 25th to 27th with a 27.76 power ranking in the Division II Non-Select rankings.

Twenty-eight teams will earn playoff bids in the Division II Non-Select bracket. The regular season is scheduled to end Saturday with playoff pairings announced on Monday. First-round playoff games must be played by Feb. 27.

If the playoffs began today, all three parish teams would open the playoffs on the road.

Cecilia would travel to face the No. 12 seed, currently Minden High (13-8).

St. Martinville would travel to the No. 11 seed, currently the Tigers’ District 5-4A rival Abbeville (19-11), which edged SMSH 4948 in the District 5-3A tournament on Friday.

Breaux Bridge would travel to the No. 6 seed, currently District 5-4A rival Opelousas (24-9).

The regional (second) round games are to be played by March 3 with the quarterfinals to be played by March 6.

The boys’ Marsh Madness state tournament is scheduled March 9-14 at the Burton Coliseum Complex located on the campus of McNeese State University in Lake Charles.

The top five teams in the latest power rankings for Division II Non-Select schools are Wossman (20-7), Bossier (19-8), Northwest (20-7), Brusly (20-5) and Franklin Parish (20-7). Four of the five are Class 4A teams with only Northwest classified as a 3A school.
