BBHS, Cecilia open 2026 baseball season with wins

The Breaux Bridge High School baseball team opened the 2026 season with a 6-1 home win over Port Barre on Feb. 9, then beat St. Edmund 6-2 on Thursday and topped St. Martinville 9-3 on Friday.

The Tigers had only two hits against Port Barre but took advantage of 11 walks to overcome three defensive errors by Breaux Bridge.

BBHS scored a run in the bottom of the first to take an early lead on walks by Sam Armentor, Benjamin Ellender, Bryce Melancon and Kyson Rebert, the last of which drove in a run.

The Tigers added three runs in the third inning. A walk by Rebert, a steal of second and an RBI single by Evan Theriot made it 2-0. Charlie Frederick then walked and after he stole second base, Kal Lalonde doubled to drive in two runs.

Port Barre scored its lone run in the top of the sixth inning on a pair of singles by Bailey Rideaux and Carson Artigue.

The Tigers got that run back and another on top of it in the bottom of the sixth. Lalonde and Armentor walked and Lalonde stole home, followed by a walk to Caynon Ardoin. Melancon then bunt singled to the pitcher to drive in Armentor.

Melancon pitched four innings to earn the win, allowing no hits and no runs while striking out five and walking four. Ardoin pitched three innings and allowed one run on three hits with four strikeouts and two walks.

Rideaux pitched five innings and took the loss for the Red Devils, giving up four runs on three hits with eight walks and six strikeouts.

Lalonde doubled and drove in two runs to lead the Tigers at the plate. Theriot went 1-for-2 with an RBI, Frederick went 1-for-2 and Melancon and Rebert also drove in runs.

At home on Thursday against St. Edmund, BBHS scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to break open a game that had been tied at 2-2 since the first inning.

The Blue Jays went ahead in the top of the first inning on a tworun single.

Breaux Bridge responded in the bottom of the frame to even the score. Lalonde was hit by a pitch to start off the inning and Ardoin hit a grounder to third base that resulted in an error that allowed Lalonde to score and Ardoin to reach second. Ardoin advanced on a passed ball and Melancon grounded out to the pitcher to bring in the tying run.

In the fifth, Noah Delahoussaye bunted to third base and advanced to second on the lay. Chase Broussard singled to drive in the tie-breaking run, and Lalonde drew a walk. Benjamin Ellender hit a line-drive double to left field to make it a 4-2 game and Lalonde scored on a passed ball. Julien Belaire scored as a courtesy runner for Ellender when Ardoin singled.

Ardoin pitched five innings to get the win, allowing two runs on three hits with five strikeouts and four walks. Christian Camacho pitched two innings and allowed only one hit and no runs with one walk and one strikeout.

Against St. Martinville, BBHS rallied with four runs in the bottom of the third inning and added single runs in the fourth and fifth, closing out with three more runs in the sixth after SMSH had taken a 3-0 lead in the early going.

St. Martinville led 2-0 after one inning after Logan Bienvenu hit a two-out double to left field to bring in Andon Smith and Kamryn LeBlanc, who had been hit by a pitch and walked, respectively. Rylin Savoy also had been hit by a pitch to load the bases for Bienvenu.

St. Martinville pushed that lead to 3-0 with a run in the third. Dixon Aymond got to second base on a twobase error and went to third on a dropped third strike, scoring on Savoy’s ground out.

BBHS scored four runs in the bottom of the third to take the lead for good.

Kai Lalonde was hit by a pitch, stole second and third and scored on Benjamin Ellender’s fly ball to left field. Caynon Ardoin was hit by a pitch and scored on Bryce Melancon’s double to right field. Melancon stole third and scored on an error before Evan Theriot drew a walk and stole second, scoring on Christian Camacho’s single to left.

Chase Broussard’s bunt single in the fourth brought Charlie Frederick home for a 5-3 lead and Camacho stole home in the fifth to make it 6-3.

Ellender’s double in the sixth brought home two runs and Melancon added an RBI single for a 9-3 final.

Melancon went 3-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and a run and Ellender was 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs to pace BBHS at the plate.

Bienvenu had a double and two RBIs in three at-bats to lead SMSH.
