St. Martinville — St. Martinville Senior High dropped its District 5-3A opener at Abbeville on Jan. 20, falling in a low-scoring affair, 4032.
Jorey Blanchard led the Tigers with 8 points and Kristian Batiste added 7. St. Martinville only shot two free throws in the game, making one.
Abbeville trailed 11-9 after one quarter and led 20-18 at halftime before outscoring SMSH 12-10 in the third and 8-4 in the fourth.
Chayson Gray had 17 points to lead the Wildcats and Kaylon Fletcher added 10. Jacolby Campbell had 8 for AHS, which went 5-for-10 at the foul line as a team.
SMSH added a couple of non-district wins to its resume later in the week, beating Rayne 65-42 at home on Thursday and Morgan City 79-33 on the road on Friday.
Cecilia opened District 5-4A play with a pair of wins, beating Breaux Bridge 39-38 at home on Jan. 20 and Beau Chene 54-48 on the road on Friday.
Breaux Bridge bounced back from its loss to Cecilia with a 59-53 non-district win over North Vermilion on Friday.
